'89 w/ 438K

I need a new fuel pump.

Went to RockAuto and the list for the '89 SHO has Bosch, Airtex, Spectra Premium, Motorcraft, ACDelco.

Motorcraft is the most expensive ($248 - ouch!).

But each listing is different w/ respect to what is included - some include sender, strainer, blah, blah and the pictures are different.

Can anyone suggest the proper one to buy so I am sure it comes with all the correct parts - or do they all come with the correct parts?

Also, is it possible to buy this at Pep Boys and does that mean it comes with a lifetime warranty?

I put one in about 7 years ago and I think(!) it was purchased from Pep Boys, but I have to dig around for the sales slip.

Thanks.

This is what I recommend. ;)

I only install Walbro fuel pumps on a SHO, as I have had problems with other manufacturers. Our kit comes with all the small parts needed to do the installation, including new clips for the fuel lines, a new filter sock, and even a new o-ring seal for the top of the tank.

If you are mostly stock, get the 155lph.

Hope that helps.

Yes, I just find your site after posting and I plan on ordering the Walbro, strut relocators and possibly the rear strut tower brace.

Is the Walbro a direct drop in?

I read a thread where the Walbro 155 is higher than the stock fuel pump and some mods had to be made - like bending something, and problems with the dampener.

See below link"

I've never replaced the pump myself, but I have to this time because I'm out of work (again) and need to save on money. But I've done just about everything myself on the engine - water pump, PS pump, 60K, CKP, and all other sensors; and just about everything in the interior.

Just a few questions:

Is there a procedure somewhere that details how to change out the pump?

I plan on dropping the fuel tank. Do you have to drain all the fuel from the tank to change the pump?

Any instructions, recommendations and tips you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

:thankyou:

I installed one yesterday from them and a new fuel tank. Mike said he never had to cut anything off the sender but when I put the pump in the bracket it was right up against the metal line. I had no ride to the store to get cutoff wheels or a way to cut it so I had to install it without the pulse damper. I suspect the damper was leaking anyway.
The pump I removed was a walbro, but the hose barb on the new walbro pump was slightly longer. I would've just bought the airtex sending unit and pump, but one member wrote that his fuel reading was off and it was probably for the 16 gallon tank. I did call airtex and they said they never heard of the issue, if there is a next time i'll buy the airtex unit.

It's easy to drop the tank on these cars I have no idea why people cut a hole under the seat.
Just relieve the fuel system pressure, then disconnect the line from the fuel filter outlet and connect a hose to it and run it into a gas can. Under the hood there is the ecu test connector just ground out the pin that is hot with the key on and the pump will run. After that there are three bolts you'll see when you open the fuel door remove them, there is one under the car holding the filler pipe then undo the four hose clamps and remove the filler pipe and hoses from the tank.
Then unbolt the two tank strap bolts. Before you lower the tank all the way undo the electrical connector, remove the two clips for the fuel supply and return line then remove the lines and just pull out the vent valve. Then you can drop the tank and remove the lock ring and pull the fuel pump assembly out. Then pry or pull off the fuel pump filter and slide the pump up and then remove it from the sending unit. You will need a small peice of mechanics wire or something because the fuel pump electrical connectors are locking there is a small hole you can push the peice of wire through to force the tabs outward then remove the connectors. You might have to cut a little peice of metal off the sending unit. If you do deburr the outside and inside of the line and the rest is pretty self explanatory. The black retainer clip is for the 3/8 line. Be careful not to bend the float otherwise the gauge will be off.
As I was typing this I remembered you had an '89 so maybe it's different, I don't know.

Sorry to hijack but you have 438k which is the highest mileage I have heard of on these cas. Wondering, Is it still running the original motor and if so what has all been done to keep it running for so long ?
