Ok, well the hole where the rod shifter brace goes on the transmission is screwed up. The first few rows are stripped and the bolt wont thread through.... I think the sho finally won... I don't want to go through the pain in pulling the motor again because i just don't have the time or mental capacity to do it again.. I would LOVE if someone who knows how to drill it out while its in the car that would be awesome, but I'm being told i either need a new tranny or scrap the project.... your thoughts?

Tap it or if there are threads further back go get a longer bolt that will fit further in. but if you go to a larger diamitor you will have to take your shifter out and moddify the bushing and metal sheath that the bolt slides through. might have to get ceative but dont give up.

hey its not as bad as what im going through the exact place that you are talking about is ummm GONE on my trans and no more trans fluid due to the motor bucked hard and riped it off i wish i had your problem but i do know "bizzy" has that half of the trans laying around if it comes down to it. if you take the bolt alone and put it in the hole can you turn in in to threads further back? if yo can get a few turns just get a longer bolt and problem solved

How does that bolt come out of the rod itself.. It looks like its pretty sealed. I dont want to ruin any of those parts. This makes me SO mad because all i have ( that i can tell) is the starter, battery and that DAMN ROD SHIFTER!!!! AHH phew, sorry, im really stressed out here!!!

Helicoil that sucker!

Is easier to do than you may think.

Buy the right size kit for the thread (sorry, don't know the actual size off the top of my head. Remind me tomorrow and I will check it).

drill out the existing threads with the drill bit

Tap out a new set of threads

screw in the insert

done!

yes helicoil is def. the way to go. dont scrap an entire project because of one stripped bolt. if we all did that NONE of us would have a car. your going to encounter problems alot worse than this. if you dont know how to fix something just ask or search, as youve seen you will get all the info you need. these cars require WORK and as long as you are willing to do it they will gladly reward you in the end. just by a helicoil kit and get that thing on the road then it will all be worth it and you will appreciate it so much because of the work you put in.

Unless it would be cheaper at a shop, buy the parts and do it yourself. You own a money pit now. We all do and we love them. Plus you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
