problems starting 94 sho

ok here is the scenario. this is my buddies car. 94 sho mtx 3.0.

the car would occasionally die and not start again. while driving, it would sometimes stumble and buck. i assumed from these symptoms a failed crank or camshaft sensor.

we replaced the crank sensor, camshaft sensor, and timing belt/tensioner along with cleaning the intake manifold and changing the spark plug wires and valve cover gaskets.

upon reassembly, the car will not start. it will crank and sometimes sputter, like it wants to start, and sometimes makes popping noises like its backfiring.

what could cause this? the car has 200k on it and ran GREAT considering its mileage. could the dis module be failing, or indeed already failed? we need to get this car running soon, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Check your ground points. Make sure the 2 bolts holding down the crossover intake are tight. Make sure that all your plug wires are seated properly. This weekend I had to start a 92 that's been sitting for year. For what ever reason, the plug wires had worked there way loose... probably because there was oil in the wells and the temperature change over the summer to winter expanded the oil and pushed the wires up.... Push them all in an bingo, started right up. ....

You can ground the two lower screws on the DIS to rule out a grounding issue. Re-check plug firing order; it is very easy to get wrong, and one of the repair manuals, forget which one, shows it incorrectly.

Did you double check your plug wire routing? As mentioned, one of the manuals has it wrong, and it's also easy to guess incorrectly. Here is the correct routing:

It sounds like you have both fuel and spark based on your first post, so crossed plug wires are a good possibility.

I just re-read the original post. So, you didn't change your plugs, only the wires? What kind of plugs and wires are you running?

the plugs were changed last summer, but i couldnt tell u what kind they are. its not my car. the wires we changed because of the leaky valve cove gasket.

im pretty sure that is the routing we are using, but ill double check when i can.
