I need to known how you keep the crank from turning when you are torquing the crank bolt to spec. The SHO is a '93 ATX. I did a search, but all I found was info on how to get the bolt out (a breaker bar on the frame while bumping the starter works like a charm!!!).

Thanks!!!

Put the car in drive, so that the crank has to turn the wheels in order to turn at all.

In order to move the shifter without starting the car you must have the key on, but the engine off. Push the brake pedal and the shifter button as usual, put it in drive. SET THE E-BRAKE.

Blocking the wheels and having someone stand on the brake pedal may help too.

Crank away.

Tried putting it in gear but the crankshaft still turns. Then I realized that only works on a manual tranny (the ATX will idle in gear). Is there some way to "pin" the flywheel?

A strap wrench is your friend. A two-wrench (big & small) set can set you back as little as $5 from a place like Harbor Freight Tools or $15 from Sears or a hardware store. The strap wrench also helps with jobs such as water pump, power steering pump and camshaft pulley pulley bolts/nuts

Another risky option on the 3.2L only is to put a large C-clamp on the damper and let it interfere with the aluminum tab below the damper. Risky because you can damage the damper and break off the tab. Use the strap wrench.

I used a strap wrench and worked like a charm. Let the handle of it rest on the AC compressor, and the tighter you torque it the more it grabs. Works great, and doesn't hurt the AC.

That damper bolt laughs at 3/4" Snap-On impact wrenches. I've heard it wail. It doesn't even muster a snicker at the starter bump and strap wrench off/on methods. They have never failed me in dozens of services.
