Probably a really stupid question :D

I am changing the transmission fluid in my 92 MTX tomorrow and I am wondering how exactly I would go about changing the fluid? I have done searches on the forum and have found nothing, I also looked on SHOtimes.com and in the Ford manuals and I still found nothing. So can anyone help me out here? Also what kind of fluid should I use? GM Snycro mesh? I would like to use redline but I don't feel like waiting to change the fluid I'd like to get it done before I go for a little road trip, Thanks.

Your best bet is to suck it out of the fill hole, or install a drain plug. There is a bolt you can remove that will get most of it out but there is a danger of parts getting misaligned.

Get Beth to drill and tap a drain hole! :thumbs_u: The best way would be to suck it out though, because if you remove the other plug and anything gets moved the slightest bit, you could have a dead tranny!

The fill hole is on the driver's side of the transmission, and the fluid should be to the bottom of the fill hole. I would recommend Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF.

The fill hole is on the FRONT-facing side of the transaxle, and takes a 3/8" drive ratchet extension to remove.

An easy trick I found is to buy a cheap universal windshield washer fluid pump (about $15 at most auto parts stores), 2 ~2 foot lengths of vacuum hose, and some wire to rig the pump up to the car's battery.

Feed the suction side end of the hose in through the fill hole, and the outlet side into a 1 gallon milk jug and turn it on. Should take about 8-10 mins to drain (washer pumps can be slow).

Once it's fully drained, you'll want to place the suction side hose into a container of fresh fluid and continue pumping into the milk jug until the new fluid has flowed completely through the pump.

Then just reverse the hoses so that the pump fills the tranny, and pump in your 3.2 qts. Total process usually can be done in under 20 minutes! :)

Any ATF will work...calls for Mercon, I think, but any ATF will work. No solenoids to worry about shorting out like in some ATXs.

Also, a hand pump works just fine. Ones that attatch to a bucket are even better. Fill it until it is up to the bottom of the hole or trickling over.
