Pressure Plate.. Oiled??

Hey everyone,

Can anyone tell me if Pressure Plates usually come oiled/papered in any way to prevent rusting? The guy who machined my flywheel told me to use brake cleaner on the flywheel surface before putting everything back together, and also unless they used a special paper, the pressure plate would most likely be oiled for the same reason and to clean its mating surfaces off. Any truth to this, and does anyone know what Josh @ SHONut does as far as his parts go? I have the NEW clutch "kit"

Also, what should I use to clean the outside/clutch "inside" area of the MTX?

ALSO: I was told to use my old PPlate bolts, since Ford apparently discontinued them. I know I need about mediuum strength (Blue?) Loctite. Will this be OK?

Yes. Most metal surfaces like that come coated to prevent rust. Brake cleaner is fine. Make sure it is clean and coating free. Blue loctite= good.

That is... blue Loctite on the pressure plate bolts is good. The surfaces of the pressure plate and flywheel must be cleaned with a solvent to remove anti-oxidants and fingerprints - any oils that could impair friction and good break-in characteristics.

How many miles are necessary/good for break in? What constitutes break in driving? Obviously no redline shifts, or fast driving doh

I can't wait until it's broken in to really take it for a spin!

500 miles of normal (sane) every day driving should be fine for a break in period.

Do you mean the inside of the bell housing? If so, you can take a wire brush and clean the clutch dust out. If that doesn't do it because of a previous oil leak, then you may need some Berryman's or carb cleaner to loosen the deposits.

I used several cans of intake cleaner to hose off all of the 12 years and 271,000 miles of crud that had accumulated on the transxaxle. I placed the transaxle on my recycle drain collection bottle and sprayed away. Watch out for the vent on teh top of the transaxle case near the driver side end of the housing. You don't want any solvent getting inside the casing. Below are the "before" and "after" shots.

Wow! That looks really clean Scott! Better than my 89's chrome painted one. thumb Just curious, how well does it shift at that mileage? Is there any need for a rebuild?

I clean every part before I put it back. B12 is my favorite.

***Also be careful not to use a solvent that leaves residue. Dupont Prepsol used to be a favorite of mine, until I was told by paint shop it leaves a film behind!
