New guy here. For starters I read the similar thread from March. Forgive me for basically asking the same thing. I am looking at a 2015 PP with 113,361 miles at Front Royal Ford in Virigina for $16k. I have read that the water pump is the main issue along with PTU, and timing set. If you look at the carfax report on that one it looks like the person took care of it religiously. I wrote out every mileage where oil was changed then looked at the difference in miles between each service. There were two times they went over about 8k. Every other time was like 6k and less. It seems like a well taken care of car and it has the performance package.

Price....I don't know. We all know everything is expensive right now. Car prices are dropping for what it is worth. More so for some brands. I only have about two months to find something since I am giving my daughter my chevy cruze. I've been looking for a Marauder but it doesn't seem like it is meant to be. Two deals fell through and those cars are not too far off in price compared to this SHO. I really don't want to spend more than $15k. Otherwise I'd get a lincoln continental. I am mechanically inclined but have never worked on a vehicle. Family and a friend has the tools and knowledge so labor should be free if something goes wrong.

What I am getting at is that it seems like the mileage is pretty high for $16k considering what might have to be fixed. Is that just me? Is it worth it? I am test driving it this weekend and I will be asking tomorrow if the water pump and PTU has had any issues.

Well now you know what to look for - get under the car and look at the weep hole and look to make sure it isnt "moist" or leaking coolant. Pull the dipstick and look for milky brown oil. Don't be afraid to bring a DTC reader, and see what codes are stored for the car.

This link talks about the approx costs to replace and location: YT - Coolant Leak

If the car has been maintenced very well - you shouldnt have issues. I would check the repair history for RDU and PTU oil changes. The PTU being the most important since the PTU is near the catalytic converter, and though Ford doesnt have a recommended maintenance suggestion - can be a source of problem.

If you want the warm fuzzy of me selling you on buying this car - you wont get it - the car should get over the recommended maintenance and it is reliable - but requires more maintenance than a Camry, for sure. Its a performance sedan. These forums are a great place to understand the basic maintenance - just search maintenance. MANY of the people here - have far more knowledge of the Duratec Ecoboost transverse engine than many shops. You can get great help and resources here and also from the ecoboostperformance.com forums. Between both you will learn quite a bit. Its a fun family car, but has its heart in being a sleeper. If you enjoy eating other cars off the line, and down the road - making people say holy ***** I didnt know that huge boat can move - its a great car.

Make sure all the recalls have been handled but the original owner: https://shoforum.com/threads/complete-list-of-tsbs.113690/

Some of the folks that author these posts I am refering to - have completely redefined the SHO - and have garnered support from vendors to get parts made that the platform was desperately missing.

All things maintenance:

Thank you for those links. Two of the threads I read was the recommended fluids and SM105ks. I will definitely look for those leaks. Thanks again.

16K is blue book from a dealer. Unless there is proof that the water pump has been changed and the PTU has been serviced regularly, you know that some expensive work is in your future, IMNSHO, not a good deal.

These are a negotiation tactic, I would strongly agree. Even transmission - when - how often, just assume its 5qt at a time. Use these as a part of the discussion to get it more like 11K

What does IMNSHO mean? How much would you pay?

11K - assume 4K for a hidden cost. when you get it - change all fluids, however check the transmission for burnt smell - wrong colors. you will more than likely cringe for the ptu

Do you know if the carfax would say if PTU fluid or RDU fluid was changed? Because it doesn't show that on the report.

if the shop uses the system it would be on there.
Well the sales guy said the owner of the car bought it from them and always took it to them for service. Would it be running okay if they never changed PTU, Coolant, or RDU fluid at 113k miles? Then he mentioned the 129 point inspection or whatever it was.

throw everything the sales guy says out... they all lie - and in between telling truths - they lie about those truths.

If the dealership was doing the maintenance it would be in carfax, so - that is how you know. the multipoint inspection is just that - visual inspection of different areas - do you know if that tech did those inspections? throw that out - get them to put it on a lift and check for coolant leaks - bring that friend and have them look for parts missing bolts - look for "chalk" marks on the transmission/ptu - make sure all recalls were performed - check that carfax. dont rule out autobody work from driveway repair guys who dont report accident damage to the body.

Whatever work the dealer did on the car there will be a record of it in their system. Ask for the complete history. And wait for the excuses.

I wouldn't pay more than 12k honestly. A 15 with 110K + miles shouldn't command a 16k tag. If it had 50k to 60k miles maybe.....

I bought my 2013 PP in 2018 with 52k miles for $20.8K before the used market exploded. Now she sits at 102K miles. I might be able to get 12k for it now. That is only because it is tastefully modded, documented, and still in great condition.

I have been in the community for awhile now, and I will not be keeping my SHO once it goes over 120K miles for ANY reason.

11k here so we are all in the hall park. Too bad it's not the end of the month or quarter. Ask for 11k and settle for 12k

On trade in they scalped the owner.

Well, I do have some time. It's just the closest one in black with the performance package, and a reasonable distance from me. I don't see a dealer going from 16k to 12k but maybe I am wrong.

Tell them you want a PPI (Pre Purchase Inspection) from a mechanic you trust who is somewhat knowledgeable about the platform. Most reputable dealers who aren't hiding anything are fine with that. If they say no, walk away or severely low ball them.

I did not and it has been sold. I am able to buy my grandparents car and give that to my daughter and keep my cruze. A much cheaper option. Also, the sales guy couldn't provide me with any records of service. It was just all word of mouth nonsense.

Wow - yeah word of mouth - grr. Glad it worked out regardless. Check back in if you find one of interest.
