i just got my 89 titanium, and it was broke when i got it. i went through the wiring harness on the ecu and icm, and found a fusible link that was blown. so now i got it running, but i swear its possesed. i put a cone filter with a heat shield on it, and it would sputter in a sequence as you drive the same speed down the road.(ex. sputter 3 times every 30 seconds.) i replaced the fuel pump and filters, cleaned out plugs,(needs new valve cover gaskets too) thermostat, and water pump. havent stopped the the problem yet, but i encountered a new problem. i got a steel mesh fulter now, and i can't accelerate too fast or the rpm's rev to 7000 and it won't stop! i have to restart it 2x, and pump ther gas pedal while the car is OFF. then it'll idle again. i don't think my maf sensor likes my new filters (wink wink)

Some SHO's are beyond picky with Cone Filters, that is if the filters are the oiled type that you can supposedly "clean". Some SHO's won't hiccup with one on and others will throw the biggest hissy fit you have ever seen, or so it seems. Take out your MAF and clean it up so no oil is inside it and see how it runs, you might have to do this a few times before oil stops coming off the filter, then it should be fine, thats if that is even the problem. You said you have bad valve cover gaskets, I'm guessing the plug well seals are bad to and the wells have oil in them. My 90 had this and never had a problem, but once again sometimes plug wires don't like this much. Get some gasket maker if you are low on cash, and new plugs and wires. Make some new seals and put on the wires and plugs see if that helps. :thumbs_u:

First off, get rid of that cone filter crap. All you are doing is pulling hot underhood air (heat sheilds... :laugh_ti: ) into your intake through a very small surface area as opposed to the stock COLD AIR intake with a large surface area panel filter. Get the stock setup back together, clean the MAF and THEN see how it runs. I'm betting it will run better and faster... you most likely are not currently getting enough air in and the air you are grabbing is HOT.

Also, pumping the gas pedal while the car is off does absolutely nothing. These cars are fuel injected... pumping the pedal only works for carbuerated cars. The fuel injection is electronic and therefore does not function while the car is off.

SO... check the cruise control cable...maybe it's stuck. Hows throttle response? Check the TPS and make sure the throttle cable and butterfly are not getting stuck. Has the MAF been relocated? Did you switch the MAF from stock? If so, did you reprogram the car to accept the new one? How is fuel pressure at the rail? Are your injectors clean?

I think your main problem is that you need to get rid of that cone filter and get the stock setup back on the car.

Good luck.

thank you

well, i got a code scanner now, and it tells me my egr valve isn't opening all the way, and my maf isn't accepting enough power, a series of like 12 other things. i don't have time to play with it now, and that was just one of three diagnostic tests. if anyone has a spare stock intake box, please email me at [email protected]. i would like one (the car didn't have one when i got it.) just for the record, i truely hated fords, until i drove this car... i am very impressed. smooth ride, and handles nice. please send comments for cheap or fast mods for this car.
