Hi, I'm new to the forum and new to SHOs in general in terms of working on them. I've always been a big fan of them and now that I finally have a chance to own one (me and three buddies pitched in on one) I joined the forum to learn a little more. I used to own two 3.8L sables and so I have a load of spare parts for my SHO. Out of boredom today I ported out the 3.8L maf, the maf looked like a real bottleneck problem for the SHO in terms of getting air into the engine and I figured it probably rendered the CAI that came with the car virtually useless.

Anyways I'm here to say I know nothing and have been lightly surfing around seeing what problems others are running into. Does anyone think this (pictures below) will assist any future mods in picking up a couple horses? If not, no biggie, it just cost me a couple hours of time that I would have spent doing something equally unimportant.

Dude you killed the actual sensor itself! LOL in the last pic it looks like you ported the inlet for the electronics.

Apparently, he doesn't.

Regardless, you've ruined the calibration of the sensor by doing that. You'll need to replace it now.

The stock MAF is not a restriction for a stock car and is good for 300chp. You just killed a good MAF.

Well like I said, It's not the stock MAF, but one I pulled off a 3.8L Sable so It's no skin off my back if it's junked.

In your OP I thought you messed up saying it was a 3.8 MAF. I guess the joke was on me? Haha

Don't sweat it. Anyways, I've yet to even put the MAF on since I'm on the other side of town doing the a/c system on a different car. Looks like I just have a lot to learn, haha.

yeah, the sensor is calibrated for a certain amount of airflow per volt... well, millivolt, actually, so the sensor is trash, but a bigger MAF is a common upgrade for SHOs. Not that it does a whole heluva lot, but once you start getting up there in bolt-ons, it starts to make a difference.

The FWD Essex 3.8L (pre-split port) and the 3.0L and 3.2L SHO share the same MAF.

i got a 80mm pro flow MAF calibrated for the SHO off ebay for like $30 , although i dont really have many other mods to help support yet it, the stock MAF may be good up to a certain hp, i felt a diff with a stock motor so id say its worth it to a certain extent, i wouldnt go paying $200+ for one on a stock motor but if you can find one cheap like i did , i say its worth it, id have to say the power diff felt like going from a stock intake to a CAI , nothing big but noticeable

Bigger MAF = chip or tuner , case closed , no other way around it.

The first mod you want is the Y-pipe. Biggest bang for the buck. Theres no cheap ass mods on a sho.

Then you car is running too lean or too rich , and/or a mix of these 2. Will result in bad MPG , plus running too lean (long term) can result in engine damage. Not worth it for a couple HP if any. You may even loose HP at some point even though you might think it has more power because it "pulls" more.

even though its supposedly been tuned for a SHO by pro flow? as for MPG i just filled it up yesterday i got about 325 to my last tank could of possibly strectched it to 350ish and its the 16.5 tank, thats a mix of city and hwy mostly hwy but alot of ac use too, oh and i just ran the car through insp like 2 weeks ago with this MAF on and i had perfect emissions readings across the board, actually both readings were not much higher then a zero, lol! , if that matters any

The Pro-flow (Pro-m) MAF's don't need a tune. But they are the only ones that don't. However, does that mean its perfect, and doesnt need any help? No, I'm sure it could be tuned alittle better.
