Ok, I just got the new Y-pipe installed today and it is still running just as bad, pops and has NO power, I have to run in 4th gear on the interstate to keep it areound 3-4K RPMs so I can make enough power to hold me at speed. The mechanic said he was sure that the plugs were fouled and I needed to get it tuned up. I come home and pull the 3 plugs on the front bank and two of them are black with the bottom electrode still a little white and one of them is black all over. I am picking up a new set of plugs tomorrow and I am wondering what else I need to replace along with them. thanks (+)

Your popping and miss firing can come from a lot of things, run some codes. I have a strong feeling that it is be your DIS module if it's not that then it could also be your coil pack. Just check each cyclinder for a spark I am pretty sure you aren't getting sparks from a couple of them. I believe that popping you hear is back fire and that is really bad for your motor. So try not to drive tooo much until the problem is solved.

ok, I got no CEL on the almost 20 mile drive home last night and I immediately pulled 3 of the plugs, I am hoping to get the last 3 tonight. I'm not too sure how to desribe the sound that it's making, when revved it's like a hesitaion, one around 1k-1500 and another around 2500 RPM. Then I have a nice surge o power around the time that the secondaries open up. I have o rev it to about 2500ish to even get moving. It tries to stall all through 1st gear

How would I check for spark? I know that must sound stupid, I am only 16 and havn't been doing this stuff for long. Do I just pull a wire and start the engine? Look for spark?

I pull a plug wire, put a sparkplug on the end of it and hold the threads against the engine to ground it. Crank engine a few turns ( no need to start), and look for spark between electrodes. Some people push a screwdriver up inside of the boot (instead of using a sparkplug), hold it close to the block, and look for a spark to jump the gap. Don't touch the metal screwdriver blade.

Ok, I pulled the plugs after work this evening, all of them have a similar white/Ashy color on the electrodes except for one, it is black all over. Is this my problem cylinder or are all of the others bad? Sorry for all of the questions, I am only 16 and I'm still trying to learn this stuff. Thanks again y'all.

ok, I found it. one bad plug, so all I need now is a set of plugs, one wire that I messed up, I think...and the money to buy it all. Thanks for the help y'all, amazing what a dropped cylinder can do, I had NO spark from that fouled up plug, I guess I as dumping fuel into the cats...

You, sir, are correct! you already know a **** of a lot more than I did at 16. If the plug is white/ashy, that's usually normal. It does get hot in there... but if one's fouled up with either gas or oil, then something is usually causing it to be that way. You might want to check to see if you're smoking out of the exhaust after you change the plug.

Also, you can't get just one wire, you have to buy all six. Sux, I know. You need to get the right plugs for the SHO, it won't just take any plugs! You need to get Autolite double platinum plugs (APP 3924) or XP plugs (XP 3924) (my god, I've memorized that number, been around here way too long) for the engine to work right. NGK iridiums work, but will not last long. Bosch +4s are horrible with this engine, and will foul out quickly. Many spark plugs are too long and won't allow the wire boot to seal against the valve cover correctly, and will let water and crap in.

enough info for you yet? lol... also, you're also right about dumping fuel into the cats, it's quite possibly what was causing the popping as well. Raw fuel igniting as it mixed with the other cylinders' exhaust in the manifold and whatnot... definitely not good for your cats. They may fail soon, I'd keep an eye on them.

I think that's enough for now... just ask away if you have any more questions. We'll do our best to help you out!

ok, guy at O'reilly's recommended the doub;e platinum Autolites. I did some searching on here and decided to get them instead of NGK's or anything. The cats clogged up, one did at least. I spent most of my $$ on a new Y-pipe as it was cheaper than replacement cats, I only have about 20 "bad" miles on the new ones so I am hoping that they are ok, I had to get it home lol. The guys at the muffler shop were very helpful, told me that it was probably plugs and I needed to get it tuned up. And now I'm here. This car truly is a money pit....I never thought I could love a money pit so much....But seriously, thanks a ton y'all.
