Has anyone on the forum mocked their SHO up to look like a police car? Or does anyone have a real SHO police car? I have seen tons of pictures of the grill but I am looking beyond that difference. Interior pictures? police radio? steel wheels with dog dish caps, etc? Any info or pictures? Thanks!

I have a 1992 Taurus ex-police car. The grille and the dual exhaust are the only external differences between the regular and police taurus. The police taurus uses the SHO susupension and sway bars. The motor is a 3.8L with some differences internally, different ECM, and the transaxle is unique with a 3.73 final drive ratio. This gives the car great get up and go around town and the suspension being from the SHO gives it good handling too. Inside there is a police certified 140 mph speedometer. Options for the interior are rubber floor covering, vinyl seats either front and rear or just rear. Mine came with carpet and cloth seats but I've since added the rubber floor covering. There was a gauge option too in place of the coin tray. Before converting your Taurus or SHO to look like a police taurus it would be much better to buy an ex-police car used. I bought mine in AZ off ebay for $1200 (ex-supervisor car no lights on roof, solid color) and it came in great shape. They had done really good maintenence on it. I suggest checking ebay for taurus (police, cop) just copy that in the search box. They are on there all the time and that includes solid color cars with no lights on the roof. If I had the room I'd buy another, they are fun cars, decently fast around town with a lot of low end torque, great SHO handling, and a lot less maintenance than a SHO. I have done nothing to mine except put in a starter since Dec 2003

Thanks for the response...I have a 89 SHO which was an Ex police car (actually Fire investigators car) which someone converted to carpet and leather seats. I am curious where you got your rubber floor matting? Do you have any pictures? Thanks again for the response. :thumb:

SHOs never came with a police package like Crown Vics (P71) or Caprices (9C1) did. Tauruses did, just never in SHO trim. The police grills you see are from other police Tauruses.

The rubber floor covering I got from another police car. An ex-police was on ebay did not run sad shape. I convinced the owner that I'd buy the car, he could ship me the floor covering and then do what he wanted with the rest. No one else bid, I got the car for the reserve and he shipped the floor covering. The rubber floor covering is rare. The only one I have seen was on this car. All other police cars I have seen including the ones in my town have the carpet and cloth seats. The vinyl seats are rare too. I have never seen them except in the pictures in the brochure.

Bill, couple of other questions - what does a Gen II Police grille look like (I've only seen Gen I police grilles).

Also, is there any unique VIN number for Ford police vehicles? If so, which digit(s)?

Thanks - zak

I notice that many people already mistake the white Gen Is for police cars. Mostly dim light driving but when im on the highway i notice a lot of people slowing down and/or hitting brakes and such when they see me behind them. The lights look similar in shape and dimensions to the crown vic to the untrained eye and it can get real annoying when people start going 5mph under the speed limit when they notice you. I just drop into 4th and go flyin by...would do a third gear drop and really let them know whats up but then again, my 3rd gear sync is shot and its not worth it to **** the trans.

and its easy to scare the ricers...just race em!

I play that joke with my green gen II , at night the car looks black, so I turn off my lights at entrances and leave my parking lights on ( unfortunately I have day time running lights but they still can't notice) and everyone will brake hard as they come close lol

It's just a 12" x 3/4" slot under the floating Ford emblem.

Interesting (the 12 x 3/4 slot). My 1995 grille is integral with the front bumper cover - do the Police cars separate this into two pieces?

The Gen 2 SLO has the police grill option with the slot. They all have seperate girlls and bumpers like the Gen 1. The SHO was the only Taurus/Sable that didn't have a seperate grill on the Gen 2 body style.

Regarding the GenII Police Grille It is the standard grill with small piece removed fom the bottom. In the center they just cut a shallow scallop out. You can make one from a regular grille just by looking at the photo in the police brochure and taking a jig saw and removing the a small scallop in the center. They are not available anywhere I have found.

Thats hella cool!
I am in the process of joining a volunteer EMS in Springfield, Virginia....That would be cool if they let me add strobes to my black Gen 1....maybe I should consider a different county in Virginia so I could :woohoo:

I already have the "Police Interceptor" badge. :naughty:
See it already kinda looks like the Fairfax County cars!
