Do you think it would be bad for the plug wires ,to take them out every once in a while to clean out the oil in the plug well?

I think it would be better than letting them soak in oil. However, not as good as fixing the leak and not having to worry about that.

heh, seriously. Oil in plugs means its time to start tackling some of those upper 60k tasks. How much do valve cover gaskets and plug well seals run these days? I think I paid nearly 80 dollars for mine..can't remember though. All I know is, plugs, gaskets, and wires set me back a good chunk of change.

Yeah Matt, they are still about $80 at rockauto.com.

sho me92, emptying out the wells is only a temporary fix. Depending on how bad your leak is, you could be getting the oil out almost everytime you drive. And if you do that too often, you could damage the wires if you aren't careful

If your really in a penny pinch, remove the cam covers, and apply a light bead of RTV to the plug well seals. It works.:thumb:

I'm doing my upper 60K right now. It looks like its going to run me about $350 - $375. That uncludes buying the Tappet compressor and holder. I'm also borrowing a shim kit and paying for the shims that I use. I started my upper 60K becuase of oil in the plug wells. It eventually started missing something terrible! I could hardly drive it anymore.

Make sure you clean out the oil and grit from the plug well before you take out the plug. If not, all that shit will drain into the cylinder. I'm guessing that can't be good.

I took around a quarter of a roll of paper towels to soak it up and get it out of there. I was advised that under no circumstances should you let the oil drain into the combustion chamber. I would assume it would foul your O2 sensors and other things along the exhaust. Unless you were completely rebuilding it I'd clean it up as best you can and do what I did, I bought the valve cover gasket set from rock auto, intake gaskets, and I replaced them both at the same time. My intake gaskets werent' going to work a second time so I had to personally. But it's all worth the hastle, all the leaks I have are old stuff burning off and melting away, no a single pool of oil yet, only what I couldn't get up with the towels at the time, car runs great, I just wiped the plugs off really well and cleaned the boots carefully, runs like a champ.

easy way.. get a spray bottle top (the spray part) pull it out, and put the suction end down in the well.... instant oil-in-the-plug-o-vac .....
thats what i have always done when doing 60k's on cars... as well as lot of others..

As stated, if your in a bind, pulling the valve covers and plug seals off VERY CAREFULLY, and applying a layer of RTV will make them last alittle longer.. just dont count on it holding as long as new gaskets will.
