possible problem with CPS need cheap fix

I have been having a stalling problem with the engine hot but still only half way on the gauge .I beleive it is the CPS as another thread was answered by people in the know .my problem is I have to drive my step son to san francisco as he starts college there soon I think it is most likely the water pump leaking a little not enough to puddle on the ground but enough to mess up the sensor .my question is being I will not have enough money to do the repair before we go whould it harm the engine to us a stop leak product until I get back home ? I have used prestone stop leak in other vehicles but do not want to mess up this engine but I have no other choice but to chance it as it is or use a stop leak product

Start by reading the codes to see if you get a CPS code. There are links in my signature with instructions and you can do it yourself at home with something as simple as a short piece of wire or a paperclip.

Let us know what you find. Faulty DIS modules or coil packs can also cause operational problems when the car gets hot.

Does it just stall at idle or is there a shutter before it dies? Can you hear the fuel pump cycle when the ignition is turned.

When cranking, does the tach move at all?

If the tach is moving it could be the DIS, or other related issues and not the CPS. I would definately check the codes before replacing anything.

Help stalling is driving me nuts

well I have gotten some help diagnosing my stalling issue and I do not beleive it is the cps as it does not affect the tach as it was described to me also the battery cables are in good shape so that also was not it .I checked the codes are 111 ,157 ,542 the maf sensor was cleaned and that did not help .and I was told that the 542 code just means that it died without shutting off the engine switch .it still has spark even when it dies but seems like it is starved for fuel .this only happens when it is really hot outside .and then about an hour later it will start and run fine until I stop then it does the same thing .I was thinking the problem might be the fuel pump but it comes on everytime I turn the key .and there is another thing that concernes me on top of the intake there is a nozzle that is conected to nothing and I am not sure what it does but on another members sho it has a braided line and fitting coming from it and connects some where behind the throttle body . although the problem is only when very hot outside the engine temp gauge never gets past the half way point .I have no choice but drive this car to california on sunday nights o any help whould be welcomed.....Thanks

I'm no expert here, but it does seem to be a fuel problem. Have you replaced the fuel filter recently? If you have access to check the fuel pressure at the manifold that might be very telling.

The only code that would seem applicable is the 542 being a bad ground/ open pump issue.

Have you had the intake manifold off for any reason recently? You may have a bad ground there especally near the DIS. I had this issue once before and the car would crank, pump would cycle, tach would move, but not go. I was on the road and couldn't check codes, but found I hadn't tourqued just one of the 12 manifold bolts enough ("head in hands with shame") and it had backed out enought to cause a bad ground.

There is ZERO chance that the "computer" could diagnose a faulty fuel pump.

I was thinking the same thing, UNLESS they used the ability to fire the fuel pump from the EEC test connector and found that the pump wouldn't pump. In any case, IIWM, I'd recommend getting a second opinion, one which includes putting a fuel pressure gauge on the rail to test fuel pressure.

My suspicion is that they read the 542 and translated that into $$$ - a boat payment.

Now, the fuel pump may very well be the problem. However, there is virtually no way that they could have accurately diagnosed it unless they also used a fuel pressure guage.

Its sounds like to me that its the cps sensor.I had the EXSACT same problems with mine. What happens is the collant leaks down into the housing where the cps is and screws it up.My 95 would normally start cold and when it got hot would not start.I could let it sit and an hour later it would start again, But eventually it got worse and wouldnt start. Its an enexpensive fix and will probably solve your problem. It is a little difficult getting to do to the fact that you have to remove covers and a couple other things to get in your way.Its down there and wont be as hard as you think.I do know it needs to be gapped so look up specs im sure there plenty of them on here.Good luck bro.
