Hi all...
I have a 93 MTX...
So I just finished swapping out my A/C compressor, got cold air, and now driving home tonight, I lost all the gears in my car... thankfully I was in 2nd, so I was able to still start off at red lights.
Ok, when I say I lost all the gears, I think the transmission is fine... It's just that the shifter moves around with no resistance... feels like it's not connected to anything at all, just flops around... I have no idea what that means happened...
I've been successful at doing the front and upper 60k and A/C compressor swap myself... but I need some expertise on what anyone thinks this problem is, and how I can go about fixing it... I did search the forum, and found one thread about someone who had the same problem, but it was back in 2005, and there was no resolution....
Thanks,
Gregg

The tranny ok just the shifter? Might have broke the shifter boss where it mounts under the car. Search for that and see what comes up. Jose was selling an upgrade for that IIRC. I think that was to prevent it from breaking though.

If you get under the car, you'll see two rods. One just bolts to the transmission case - a hard shift can break the case where it bolts too (this is the shift boss). The other rod you see is the one that does the shifting. It should be bolted to a rod that comes out of the side of the transmission case.

If both of these things are still connected, try to move the shift rod in and out of the transmission. If it moves then the problem is in the shifter.

When it broke, did you do a hard 1-2 shift?

Nah, I was just driving normal when it broke...
I inspected the shift rods.. no problem... I dropped the black box and opened it up.. the problem was in there... the socket for the ball broke off the end of the rod. The shifter itself is intact.. but the socket where the ball goes into is snapped off. What do I do? Any suggestions??
:thankyou:

I have seen this before.
A little welding and your good to go.
If the ball and socket seem to be really loose, I would buy a new one from...

This is exactly what happened to me one night before a Gingerman event 2-3 years ago.
Welded together at a T/A truckstop for $50 and still fine.
