Hi, yes this is my first post. I recently purchashed a 92 5sp SHO from the origial lady owner in great condition for $2000. I currently has 160K original miles and I have receipts for the 60K and 120K service. It has had synthetic oil changed every 3000mi since new. Mechanically it is in great condition.

Now, when I bought the car about a week ago sometimes it would run OK, sometimes it would barely run, stalling and quitting for no reason. I checked the trouble codes, something about MAF sensor out of range and the 10deg timing default. So I replaced the MAF sensor and the cam position sensor and reset the ECM and it does better. But starting off is difficult because when you push the gas (in neutral or in gear), the RPMs drop about 200RPM before they pick back up. It is sluggish overall and it still dies sometimes while idling, even in neutral. I haven't driven the car except once or twice because I am nervous about it.

Anyways, I checked codes again after replacing those, it still says timing default to 10deg and now it says TPS voltage lower than expected. So I reckon I will get a new throttle position sensor today also.

I was futzing around earlier today and I discovered that the passenger firewall side SPOUT jumper is missing (I didnt knwo what it was, I looked it up). Now if this is simply a jumper, could I just cut the connector out of the circuit and wire it up with some generic electrical blade type connectors? If not, where would you go to get another jumper?

Also, I was looking around and found these two items below the coilpack area:

I have no idea where the first one goes, but the second one looks like an IAT, or some similar air temp sensor, does anyone know where that would go? I know these two items could affect the engine controls significantly. Thank you for reading this far. :)

the second pic should go to that intake box where the filter is located, or it could actually go to the intake tube. I dont see that being the culprite of your problems cuz we had one off for some time now with no problems at all.

Is there any advantage for it being off, or do you think it just fell out? I am going to try to replace the TPS ASAP and see what happens, hopefully they will have it in stock. Thank you for the quick reply!

well are you letting the engine warm up to operating temperature first? mine does the exact same thing, and i think it is normal. mine drops a good bit at first before it revs up, which does make driving kinda hard. but after just a few minutes of driving and its warmed up, this problem completly goes away. very responsive throttle now, at least in my case. make sure the engine is completely warm. and if you do drive it for a while and it does not matter, then it could be your thermostat is stuck open.

I do like to allow warm up time in the morning. It was cold out but the temp gauge was a little under halfway. Anyone know about what temperature halfway is?

The first pic, IIRC, is the phantom connector that goes nowhere. My '92 has the same connector disconnected.

The second pic is the intake air charge temperature sensor (IAT). It's supposed to be mounted in the airbox, and it being removed can definitely cause some drivability issues to manifest. It fits into the side of the airbox facing the engine.

Congrats on the new SHO. :thumb:

Thank you very much. :thumb:

I thought that looked like kind of like an IAT, I just wasn't sure if there was a reason it wasn't mounted anywhere. I will let everyone know what it looks like when I replace the TPS.

Also, what is the verdict on the SPOUT jumper, is it OK to remove the jumper connector out of the circuit and use blade type connectors? The jumper is nowhere to be found and I have no idea know where I would find another one.

Thank you all.

I cleaned the air filter with an air nozzle but it is probably due for a change, I did notice the hole in the airbox for IAT.

Perhaps it has something to do with it being cold outside and the IAT not being secured in the proper location? It does alot better when the outside air temp is warm.

If the SPOUT connector has been pulled, then your SHO is running on static base timing (10* BTDC) which is dramatically affecting performance. You can jumper the SPOUT connector with anything that's a good conductor. After you replace the SPOUT connector, you should check for trouble codes:
