Hey there. New to the whole posting bit on here but not until recently have I had a question worth asking. I have a green 91+ that has been a big pain in the ass since the day I got it. In the constant repair jobs alone I've spent a small fortune (by my standards at least), but I still love the beast. Unfortunately fate has struck me at a very inconvenient time. It seems like my clutch has bit the big one. I cant get it into any gear whatsoever except reverse, with some gear grinding. The car will go into gear smoothly while shut off, but as soon as the engine comes on it'll take off on it's own not taking into regard whether or not I have the pedal depressed. So yeah, technically I can drive it if I keep on shutting it off everytime prior to changing gears, but that's not a very realistic option. Anyway, my question is, with the stated symptons, is it most definitely the clutch? Budget's tight and there's no way I can afford to dish out the $900+ Im being asked by various garages to replace it so by mere necessity, I have to do this one myself, it'll definitely be a learning experience.

Sounds like the throwout (release) bearing and/or pressure plate fingers have worn out. Before doing any work, first try adjusting the tension in the clutch cable by lifting the clutch pedal with about 10 pounbds of force. This will allow the spring loaded ratchet mechanism on the clutch pedal to remove any slack in the cable. If you hear any "clicks," the cable was tightened.

Your throwout bearing and pressure plate have likely worn out. I just went through a clutch replacement myself. You can see the story and pictures by going to the topic titled Clutch Time 3.

Nice pics. Now would you say this is a 2-man job or can one person pull it off on their own? I'll definitely be getting the Sho Nut video to help out so I won't be lost. I'm going to try to get a gearhead friend of mine to help me out but I dont know if that'll happen or not and considering my lack of automotive repair whatsoever, I wanna know if I can pull it off if I just pay damn good explicit attention to that video.

I just completed my clutch and tranny install last Sunday. One person can do the whole job, but an extra set of hands are helpful during the removal and installation of the trans.

It is possible to do it yourself... but one, or two extra sets of hands are VERY helpful (even if just watching) with anything complicated such as this boink

I have found that if I work on my car with a buddy I tend to pay MORE attention to what's going on... and I feel less rushed so the job gets done right the first time. wink
