Pecking Sound when the car is idleing

it is faint when the car is idleing and then at about 1500 it is its loudest but then right after 1500 it just stops all of a sudden like there is a switch or something.

Any suggestions? car seems to be running fine. Once again i am lost

Sounds like it could be either a Timing Chain Tensioner or a Timing Belt Tensioner. I would recommend finding a Mechanics Stethescope and pinpointing the source of the noise.

You may want to double check the valve lash gap anyways. I took a set of 3.0 SHO heads to a Shop that only does cylinder head work and guess what, they messed them up. They were suppose to be the best shop within 100 miles or more.

I had 24 new bronze guides, new valve seal, the valve ground and the whole works for a total price of around $500. When I picked up the finished heads the valve lash gap was off on almost all 24 valves and the worst part is that they milled the front head down so far that it is now only good for parts.

Remember a "little" bit of noise can be normal, a over head cam engine is not as quiet as a push rod engine. Also the fuel injector will make a clicking sound.

sounds like it is coming from the timing cover - will futher investigate this. any suggestions?

Could very well be the bearings in the Timing Belt Tensioner pulley. No way to know for sure unless you pull the timing covers and then start it up and use a stethescope, or a screwdriver (carefully) to pinpoint the noise.

How old is the timing belt. I had a similar issue a while back, and it turned out that the timing belt had stretched enough that it was slapping the cover. If you are sure it is coming from the timing cover, I'd say go in there and replace both the belt and the tensioner.

On an ATX the tensioner is hydraulic, so it is fairly unlikely it has lost tension. I have never heard of the cylinder failing and the belt losing tension.

since the sound car has been sitting still, and the sound i am definante is coming from the timing belt cover haven't had a chance to take it all off though.

When replacing the pulley what all is invloved? Any pointers?
