I was wondering how much it costs to get a new paint job? I am obtaining a 89 once silver SHO. It needs a new paint job, and radiator, but that's already covered. Anyway, how much for a good one and a bad one so I know what to look for and expect. Thanks for any and all info in advance.

Welcome to the board! Anyways, for a paint job, it can range from 299 for a maaco job, to 4k for a show winning finish. Prices also depend on the amount of prep work needed, etc etc.

Hmmm, I hate being 16...
...anyway, what would be your choice? I'm thinking 500. I know, I'm cheap, but I'm not rich either.

Well if you are gonna go with a Maco Special, best you sand and prep your car 1st. Also go with the same color, cause they are NOT going to do all the door jams and all. After they are done painting, Take your car to a detail shop, or somewhere were someone is good with a buffer, and have them take ALL the orange peel off of your car. That would prolly be the best you could do for 500-1000$

Doesn't matter where you go for paint. All the Name Brand paint guys use the same quality paint, the difference is the quality and the cost of the labor. I have had several paint jobs at MAACO. They do a good job if you do the set up first. 1st: You detail all the painted areas in the doorjams, trunk, under the hood. 2nd: You take all the emblems and trim off the car yourself (less to tape around). If you cant, stop by the shop that will paint the car and have them pop it off for a couple bucks. 3rd: You sand the entire car yourself. Try to only take the gloss off the paint. Spray prime any bare metel spots you uncover. Go to the library and pick up a book on auto refinishing. Learn to wetsand. I would wetsand with 280 then 400 grit. 4th: After you get the car back have it buffed, ask the shop how long to wait on that. 5th: Replace all the door seals and emblems with new. Buff the headlight and taillight assembleys.
There is nothing wrong with budget body shops. They are only going to spend X-amount of labor on your car. The prep work is just as important as the guy spraying the paint. Nothing looks worse than a nice paint job with crappy worn emblems and trim. Just before you drive to the shop remove anything you can so they dont have to tape it off, a bad tape job will ruin a paint job. Last: shop around, many shops like MAACO have great deals around Dec-Jan-Feb. Everyone is broke from x-mas, waiting for tax returns. You can get a great paintjob less bodywork for 500$ easy, you just have to do some of the work.

No, all places do NOT use the same quality paint. Maaco and Earl Scheib use baked enamel paints that will look horrible no matter how they're applied, but it is inexpensive, so they use it.

If you have a car painted there, be prepared for the jambs to not match the outside of the car in terms of color or texture. They won't remove any trim, and will just do a rough masking job. If you want it to look remotely good, it's best to remove of the exterior trim as possible first, and do the preparation/sanding/primering yourself.

Paint jobs, more than anything - you get what you pay for.

Not true. I have had several cars painted at MAACO. Sure if you drop it off and come back the next day and hand over 200$, you will get what you pay for. You can get a good poly/clearcoat paint job for about 500$ with a 5 year guarantee against pealing and loss of gloss. Alot of new car dealerships use MACCO for body/paint work on cars that have been traded in. MACCO is a good alternative for a car that needs paint but is not worth spending 2-4k on.

BTW: Baked enamel was OEM and the industry standard for years. When I repainted my 67 GTX that is what I went with and it looked great.

can you send me some pics of what a 3800 paint job looks on the sho? i am having my car painted this spring. did they take the glass, handles and lights out instead of taping it up? that seems like a LOT of money for a paint job, unless its custom mixed.

I had my 92 SHO done last year by Maaco. They stripped the hood and primed my new nose and painted the whole car and the black trim around the windows. It cost my $650. I think it looks great. Well anything is better than what it looked like before. Hey if your going to drive it everyday and the way some people are in parking lots and other places, I'd rather have a $650 dinged up that a $2,000 to $4,000 job messed up.
