What do you guys think of the paddle shifter? I haven't tried using mine yet, I only got about 300 miles on and haven't really spanked it hard yet. I also heard that without the 12s package, the tranny will still shift automatically in the M position if you really wind it out.

Having Had lots of automatic SHO's, Every color and every year. I think they are not really needed. Ford did a fantastic job on this trans, the shift points are perfect, the firmness is perfect.. Ive used mine when people come in to see the new car after they say its a shame that its not a "true" s speed.

Thats when I take them down a back road put it in Sport Mode and make them squirm a little:)

I do have 1 concern though with the trans/engine though, it shifts to fast when driving around. See all the roads around here are 35-45 mph and the trans is set up to hit 6th with min throttle at IIRC 42mph and it lugs around. Still plenty of power to cruise bt when you want to nail it the trans shifts from 6th to 2nd, it takes off like a **** but that just stinks a bit.

Ive just upped all of mine by 5 mph at low throttle input.

Thanks Kirk... just to make sure, when you're using the paddle shifter, you don't lift, just hit the paddle when you want to shift.
It's a really neat gadget and it gives the SHO a performance look, but I can only see using it on like a mountain road. I'm guessing the tranny would be shifting excessively in those conditions.

To answer your question earlier Mike, when in Manual mode in any new "selectshift" transmission (including all new Taurii and Fusions with the 3.5L) it will not upshift until you tell it too. It will downshift automatically though. I also found out the rev limiter, at least on the Fusion Sport with the 3.5L, doesn't bounce off an rpm, it holds the redline instead. It's like hitting a wall of a constant fuel rate to hold the motor.

When I test drove the new SHO, the only purpose I found the paddles for were for engine braking, which I prefer over pedal brakes because it activates the fuel shut off program earlier and in theory will save you fuel in the long run, as well as saving your brakes. Of course, the one thing I worry about when engine braking is that your brake lights don't come on when doing it and someone behind you if distracted could rear end you if they didn't see the lights come one and would probably sue you for it.

As far as up shifting goes, it still feels like the shift comes ages after you told it too, but it will hold the gear, which could be nice on hills or sweepers. Although the selectshift also has a hill decent mode that it goes into, when you first enter manual mode and will stay there until you tell it to change gear. It's nothing spectacular really, it just locks out overdrive gears.

2 reasons and 2 reasons only for paddle shifters

1) to downshift to a selected gear for a street roll race

2) to keep you in a selected gear (like mentioned low mph areas and on the twisties) it will keep it from doing unwanted upshifting

other than that, let the trans do it's own thing

There's a 3rd reason (the one I used on my SST-equipped LS)--downshifting to 3rd for passing on 2-lane highways. Of course, I didn't have paddles, but I did use the SST functionality.

See, I thought this thread would be about the physical quality of the paddle shifter lol. how about that?

I know a lot of people had expressed concern with the fact that they seem flimsy. Any plans for A/M (perhaps metal?) paddle shifters?

yea, the black plastic is kinda tacky and not very robust, but it gets the job done. I really wish they went with the standard "up on the right, down on the left" Shift style because every time I get in one (the MKS included) I try to down shift with the left and up shift instead.

everyone always says that, but i have never driven a car that had an up on one , down on the other

my 08 vette was the same way, although they were the opposite as far as push / pull, but you could activate from both sides

i don't see how it would be better to only be able to work from one side,

To me, it's intuitive to upshift using the back of the paddle and downshift pushing out on the **** on top... but then, that's just me.

is there any way to alter that?
If it's like the SST in the LS, it should actually be fairly easy to do--just disconnect the upshift switch on one side and the downshift switch on the other. You might even be able to connect them in parallel so push and pull both upshift on one side and downshift on the other.
