On my way to work this morning I got a flashing SES. Turns out it's a misfire on cylinder 4 (had to be the rear bank). Made it over two years without running into this problem. Now I gotta get four coils and figure out that intake. Wish me luck!

You don't need luck. You just need to follow the instructions on V8sho.com. Heck, you can even do it without it. If I did it anybody can.

What I did was take pictures of everything. I also used little ziplock bags and labelled the bolts and gaskets, etc that I removed.

I know it's a giant PITA, but you may be better served in swapping coils first to see if the CEL comes back. If it does on the same cyl , with a different coil, then that MAY rule out the coil and point you in the direction of the plug itself.

Flashing SES usually means mis fire timed with the flashing of the SES. Could be as simple as the plug - or somthing more sinsiter. Kirk, or Paul would be better equipped to go beyond what I have suggested.

Sure would be nice if it was just a spark plug. Looking on rockauto coils are made of gold...

Airtex-$75.79
Motorcraft-$116.99
Standard Motor Products-$123.79
ACDelco-$129.79

Your suggestion would give me a chance to practice pulling the upper intake...

If you plan on having the car for a while I would get new coils and new plugs. If the plugs are original it's time to change them anyway. And if the intake has not been taken apart it needs to be cleaned.

The lower intake needs cleaned about every 30k to keep the secondaries from carboning up. The four used coils from the back will come in handy when the front ones start to fail.

FWIW I believe the new coils you can get now are better than the OEM ones anyway.

Taking the intake apart is not that hard. Just don't loose the EGR gasket. :)

Eric changed the plugs, rotated the coils front to back, and cleaned upper and lower intake when he welded the cams at just under 37000 miles. As of today i'm at 76500, so just shy of 40k on the plugs. Probably wouldn't hurt to change them anyway. I have a lower intake that has the butterflies removed and some phenolic spacers to install also. Sounds like a good time to get everything done at once. Thanks all.
