Okay, after trying to find a rattle on the front of the motor,it showed itself...the pulley for the belt tensioner on the p/s belt seized..lots of smoke...So I am now looking for a new one..after a lot of searching, nothing.
Does anybody know how to fix this piece or where I can find another.
Thanx.Mike

I sent you a email re: Collen, but I forgot to add something. I guess if you were SOL you could most likely buy a used one either of him or Shawn Macdonald([email protected]). They both have 89 parts cars. Collen lives in on the east side, while Shawn lives in lethbridge.

Mike,

I had exactly the same failure on my 89 back around Christmas.

I chronicled my efforts to use the previously reported Gen III tensioner pulley and my lack of success in this forum.

I finally got lucky and was told of a junk MTX in the local U-Wrench-It, ran over there, and snagged a used pulley for $5. My car was on jackstands in the garage for a week while I piddled around.

Someone recently posted a pic of an idler pulley they ordered from RockAuto, but I don't recall if they ever reported if they sucessfully installed it.

Best bet - pick up a used one or order a new one from Ford for about $100.

ZOOMX2,

The bearing you are looking for is an "NSK BD20 15DWA". According to SHOZ123 this bearing is used in later Generation SHOs pulleys. The pulley is different but the bearing is the same.

The later pulley is about $30. You could press out the bearing from the new pulley and press it in to your old one. SHOZ123, if you see this, what model year is the pulley you found with this bearing?

You could also find a bearing that is very close to the dimentions of the NSK bearing. Then have a machine shop machine the pulley so the "NEW" bearing fits with a press fit into the pulley.

A few thousandths difference in the mounting hole should not make a difference. It could be shimmed with shim stock if the size difference is more than say 5 thousandths.

Before you go through a lot of trouble, check with a major bearing distributor for the above mentioned bearing. Maybe the proprietary prohibition on retail sales of the bearing has been lifted. rangerj

Found a pulley!!! And I thought water pumps were hard to find. To remove this puppy..i just loosen the hex nut on top then remove the nut on the adjusters pulley..correct? And yes new belts are also going on..anything special that I should look at or do?
Thanks alot for the help gentlemen.. :

zoom,

Yeah, that's pretty much it. A 14mm ratcheting box wrench from Sears helps alot. Loosen/tighten the tensioner by turning the 5 mm Allen screw on the top. I use a 3/8" bit on about 18" of extensions to adjust mine. Works fine.

I also happen to have the roll dampener out of the way, don't know if it would interfere with the tool.

FWIW I always have to take off the lower bracket of the roll dampner, takes about 1 minute and makes it much easier to work in there. Good luck.

The bearing is the same for all years of the Gen 3. This is for the idler pulley, NOT the tensioner pulley which is what projectSHO89 used IIRC. On my spare 3.0L motor the GEN 3 idler pulley is a direct replacement on both 3.0L tensioner pulleys.

The Gen 3 tensioner pulley is a different animal.

Paul,

The problem, as I had discovered, was that the part number that you had been supplied with and had subsequently posted, was for the water pump belt tensioner. That's why it didn't work.

The Gen III idler pulley isn't all that cheap at around $62 (discount), but it is less than the Gen I/II idlers at almost $85.

AARRRGGGHH!!! I discovered another parts person who does not listen!! The pulley was a "u" code not a "y" code...thus no fit..and am having no luck finding the bearing so far..you say that the bearing is also in a genIII..what year and if possible the part number.
Went to the Ford dealer for a quote for the part..just the pulley and bearing..$175.00 plus tax..whats thing made of?? platinum!
So I am back on the search, found a wreak here in the city, but the engine is a runner so no parts to scavenge..only the whole motor(I dont think so)
So gentlemen,I am back looking for ideas..its gotten to the point that if i can find something close, I will just chuck the part that the pulley attaches to,that then attaches to the pin on the adjuster, and machine it down to fit something more available.
Sorry for the rant, SHO's are rare around here and part cars are few and far between..and the parts people seem to know that.

Well, found out today that the bearing number that was posted is still available..one small problem with it though...its a restricted production bearing...only sold to specified people, not to the average joe..
So unless you are building Volvos or Saabs, you ain't getting it..like those two brands have cheaper parts...on to used parts...
Mike
.....thanks for all the input gentlemen..greatly appreciated!! thumb
