Every year where I live they switch to this stuff from Nov to Jan. Will this stuff damage my SHO? It idles rough and feels like I've lost power. I try to drive the 30 or so miles to Salt Lake to buy it if I can because thay have the regular stuff but it's not always feasable. I get worried though this happens every year my car hates this crap.

Thanks

No, they won't hurt your engine. I read an article by, I believe, Patrick Bedard (the staff anti-green) in Car and Driver about the use of these fuels. The article stated that the oxygenated fuels not only decreased engine output and efficiency, but the additional oxygen caused the oxygen sensors and closed loop engine control systems to overly richen the fuel/air mixture, defeating much of the emissions intentions in the first place. The loss of mileage also proportionally increased the ppm/mile output of the targeted emissions components. This was a case of politics winning over science.

The most common oxygenator, MTBE, is a byproduct of refining that the oil companies are in favor of for profit motives. It has in addition to Scott's arguments, been shown to be a highly toxic carcinogen, and gets easily into groundwater. Lest anyone think the blame lies with any one political persuasion, California, the home of the leftist wackos, is unable to muster the will to ban this substance. Unfortunately lobby money is so addictive and corruptive there is no way in the forseeable future to fight this danger.

Several years ago when I was making numerous trips to western New York state I had the "pleasure" of purchasing the oxygenated fuels. They stink, car ran lousy, and for my troubles I had to pay about $ .30 extra per gallon. Great stuff isn't it? I'd like to personally thank the ignorant fools that mandated that crap. More profit in them? Then why did the regular gas cost 30 cents a gallon less in Toledo? Just my $.02,,,and you know what little that gets you!!

There are two types of oxy fuels. One has the MTBE popular everywhere but the Midwest and 10% ethanol mixes. Here in Illinois the 10% alky is almost used exclusively year around at all stations. It will reduce the mileage a bit but power output is near the same. It is a very good system cleaner and I have got my best dyno and 1/4 mile times using it. It will prevent detonation at a lower octane level.

But I would rather they didn't' use it. The purpose of it is to add oxygen to the fuel for better emissions but with computer controlled FI it is a moot point. MTBE is an oil company alternative to ethanol. It is and ether base which will dissolve in water and is a carcinogen. Ground water pollution is a big problem with it and a drive is under way to eliminate the use of it. Of course the alcohol producers want the ethanol to be used country wide. A terrible waste of energy, resources and your tax dollars.

Long live the Republicans bs
