Hello all, I have someone that has an SHO with 230k on it. He has told me it has gotten a 60k,new clutch, replaced valve cover gaskets, new belts, new windshield, newer tires and a rebuilt trans. he says it runs good. He is a member of this forum which would lead me to beleive he knows how to take care of his car (and he owns like 3 shos). What sort of things would probably break around that 230k mark? i'm by no means an expert so I thought I should ask just in case I might be digging myself a hole. Thanks!

its like anything else there is no way to tell what if anything is going to break. it sounds like a well matained vehical so i would not worry about it. on another note there are a few guys on here pushing well past 300k without major issues.

If I check it out are there any noises I should listen for? Anything to look for? My concern was bearings, how long do those last generally? Thanks for the advice

I've owned a 93 LX (265k when parked-drove it to the junkyard)

.. as I realize it's pretty well a different car, it was still made by Ford. Growing up in the Ford family that I did, I've seen them last over 300k. mustangs, windstar-minivan, f350's, broncos, tbirds...etc... all have been owned by my older brother and dad (mom-minivan lol).. but most of them had over 300k when sold/parked/crashed etc..

I think it's more of a question as to how well the car has been treated/maintained- as lowc mentioned, it sounds well maintained, and I agree with that.

I'd say as long as you show 'er some love, that sho will love ya back.. lol

usually the rod bearings should be done around 120k, and checked when you do the 60k's. aslong as you dont here any rapping, knocking,or tapping you should have nothing to worry about. I would see what they have for repair records, see how the car was driven drag, track,or just plain old beaten. or if it was a normal dd. and be sure to take it for a good test drive, both highway and stop an go.

I do have to ask though why are you looking at one with the high milage? not that high mileage is a problem in these cars. just imo i think you would be able to find a lower mileaged one that needed a little tlc. (not trying to discorage you from buying it if you like it just askin). and is this gooing to be a "new" dd or a project car?

the biggest thing i would look for would but rust exspecialy behind the rocker covers and dog bones. it doesnt sound like it will have leaks but double check plug wells and under carage for any fluids.

also what year is the car in question?atx, mtx?

It's hard to find a good sho in MN (much less for a good deal) the car is a 94 mtx. This would be a DD. He also says that he has a home made catless Y-pipe.

Rust is a big deal to me. my lumina had about an inch of rust last year, I drove it one winter and now it's all over the car.

The engine is bullet proof if rod bearings are done. Most of the front and rear suspension will need attention by this mileage, usually before. Also ask if the steering rack has been changed.

The oil pressure light may flicker when transitioning to idle.

I would guess the rod bearings have been done since the seller is a forum member with 3 SHO's. Most of us are pretty proactive about that maintenance item. It is not a huge job..just sounds scary.
