Is there anyway to switch the AC to reuse the air in the car as apposed to sucking in outside air?
It doesn't matter to me but my fiancée hates the exhaust smell while sitting in traffic. I usually just turn it off while at the light and then back on once under way.
TIA.

MAx ac button, it circulates the cabin air.

so does the other a/c button, but it mixes outside air as well...

Only MAX closes the recirculate door. All other positions leave it open to draw in outside air.

I've already seen a few cars, my 89 included, that have broken the connection between the arm of the recirc door and the actuator leaving the arm fixed in one position.

To check, drop the glovebox and inspect the linkage. The vaccum motor is right behind the glovebox.

I have not yet investigated a "fix",

A little more info: The MAX A/C selection opens the recirc damper under the glovebox and closes the path to draw in outside air and remains in this configuration. The AUTO selection will use the same path (recirc) until the temperature difference between the selected temperature setting and the cabin temperature has been reduced to a preset value. You can then hear the difference in the air flow path (quieter) as the recirc damper door closes and begins to draw in outside air.
