can i replace the outer cv boot without removing the axle? I ripped a 3/8" slit in it when changing wheel bearings and dont want to take it further apart than i need to. Or is this something i can patch?

Oh come on! Don't have to be SO proper! It's a 15-20 yr old Taurus!! LOL Both my outer boots were split & I just moved the inner half of da boot into the outer half, added some grease & all was good for a year. They never even threw out much, & what little did come out helped protect stuff down under from MI weather. Guess it would matter where the split was though.

are the "quickboots" tha glue or screw together any good? I found a glue together one at oreillys or autozone that seems to be dimensoinally correct.

If your not driving it anywhere then a new boot will work. But if your driving it around you might as well get a new axle due to the dirt and crime already in there.

It gives a nice anti-rust inside the wheels and on the knuckles.... My front left side as a nice coating.

one point to add here, being someone who put new proper boots on my axles the way your supposed to.... if you don't want to pull an axle and find that daunting..... changing the boots on an axle is going to kick your ass.....

so either just get a new axle or bite the bullet and fix it correctly, you can get the right axle boot from rockauto.com

don't half ass it

I agree with 38! If your going to pull a half shaft, may as well replace it. I had boot kits & pulled them but could not find a way to remove the bearing assy to slide em on so just put new ABS halfshafts on an 89 that I wanted to save for an ABS car! Its easier to just replace.
