how many people have the original paint on their car? I was just wondering because my 92's paint is chipping bad in some places. I don't know if it is from bad care from the previous owner or if its just old paint?

Aside from a new hood and partial repaint, my paint is original and in great shape. Strangely, the new hood is where the paint is in the worse condition. Good be all the highway mileage, but I think it is a crappy repaint job myself.

All three Sho's have their original paint, minus a few boo boo touch ups. The green one is probably in the worst shape out of the three.

The older the car, the worse the paint job. My car is an enamel with no clear coat, and that was pretty much the norm in 91. I know the 87 Buick Grand National actually got recalled for its lack of paint retention, being an enamel design also. When you start getting into the newer clear coat jobs, it starts being more resistant to chips, scratches buff out easier, etc. I'm not sure which colors when had clearcoats, but I bet it's not that hard to look up.

All original after 11 years in the Texas sun. I recently received a silver award at the national convention in the car SHOw and the condition of the paint was one of the rated categories. All it takes is polish and wax. I have used Meguire's products throughout the life of my car and have to believe that they really do the job. I use a random orbital buffer to apply the polish and sometimes the wax. The paint is still glossy and deep.

I have totally original paint on my car with many paint chips in the front. Where my sunroof closes is also chipping. I'm gonna get the whole car painted, possible a different color. Mabye that blue color or black, who knows.

I purchased my 89 three years ago with 93k. The original current red was pretty oxidized until I took the B/D buffer and mcquires products to it. Now it has 125k miles and a car show finish, just check my thread for a photos.

Sho91MTX, thats the beauty about the GN's. Its so easy to see if they have their original paint. Next time you see one, look at the paint between the door window and the small rear window. If there are small orange peel cracks in the paint its original. I show my tiny paint imperfections with pride to show the beautiful original paint.

160k on the clock with original paint. I'm thinking on have the bumpers done over thou due to scratches and knicks. My car was fadded real bad when i got it. I had my cousin's shop wet-sand the whole thing, and go right throu it. Looking at it right now you would never tell what it use to look like.

I had both bumpers on my red one repainted. It makes a world of difference.

Blah!

My '91 SHO happens to be black.. and the topside, rear quarters, trunk lid, and front fenders(!!) are starting to flake off what appears to be a clearcoat?! Any cure for this? I have tried any compounds on it, but I'm assuming they won't help since there are pretty massive spots of flaked off coats. I'm assuming a prep job & respray is hte only solution. This sucks!

ah poor neno!

yeah, unfortunatly, if you don't wax the car every 6 months to a year with high quality wax with SPF 80 or above, the UV rays from the sun will slowly bake the clearcoat. once, this starts happening, a respray is usually in order.

sorry man,
Robby

Original paint here and no garage to keep it out of the sun. What helps is hand waxing the car every 3-4 months, and spraying ALL the weatherstripping w/ silicone spray (it keeps it soft and gives it a shine)

I'd recommend against changing the color of your car, as you'll have to change the title as well, and people will get skeptical when you sell it.

Yeah, mine had slight cracks, but since it was a hardtop w/no sunroof, the frame faired alittle bit better to the abuse the 3.8 dished out. Btw, I saw a buick station wagon at the strip today. Looked like a POS. He staged and I heard a whistle, and the guy next to him had some big cubes. Had no idea what was coming, the wagon handed the muscle car's ass to it. GN engine

as far as I know, you need to change the title before you sell the car, otherwise you are selling a car of the specified color on the title... It would make for a hassle for the next owner.
