I have a 92 MTX that burns a fair amount of oil. It doesn't show smoke at idle or with "regular" driving but on hard acceleration there is a fair amount of blowby smoke. It also smells bad anytime it's running. The car has ~165k miles...

Now it runs just fine, idles smooth and pulls hard but it drives me NUTS to know it's burning oil. So I'm looking into options, but I'm an a strict budget of cheaper is better. What would be the most effective option:

A) Rebuild myself (never rebuilt a motor before). The consensus seems to be that this should cost roughly 1500-2500 dollars

B) Buy a short block from ford specialists (3k!) and rebuild my heads (?)... this would be very nice but it seems pretty unattainable...

C) Buy a 3.2, as it sits and either rebuild it or just swap it in and hope it's in better shape...

D) is there some other under 1k option that will stop the SHO from burning oil???

P.S. I'm getting Kumho ASX's tomorrow!!! yay! $540 installed with alignment and warranty...

I'd pick up a bottle of Restore first. Or even some www.auto-rx.com .
You have to remember where the blow-by is coming from. More than likely, there is a bunch of carbon build up on the rings, not letting them seat properly (as a broken ring or other ring is not the issue-these rings are very durable).

I had a slight blow-by issue, wasn't as bad as you are describing yours, but I ran the Restore through the motor for a few oil changes, and all is better.
I wanted to get a before/after reading on comp. but didn't get around to it.
Just my 02.

It sounds like you have leaks AND you are buring oil.

Since these are 4-valve engines, they burn more oil. 4 valves = 4 valve stem seals.

If you replace your valve stem seals and all other leaking seals, and you are still burning oil, then I would say your rings are gone.

Valve stem seal replacement is very time consuming. I would rather replace a heater core.

I've done a BDA and heater core :)... I guess I'll give the additives a shot before moving on....

Could I have the heads rebuilt (which cover vlave stem seals right?), and if it didn't fix the problem the heads would be fine to use on a longblock??
