thread inserts are constantly used on aluminium heads. go for it

theres no oil flow thru the bolts, so oil isnt a worry

How bad of an issue is this? I really don't feel like inserting a bunch of helicoils on my 3.2.

ive heard alot about it... so it must be pretty common... FWIW alot of people use helicolils on theyre brand new heads...

A lot of it has to do with the sensitivity of the given torque wrench...and the sensitivity of the given person doing the torquing.

Many cams have been removed and installed with no problems.....

Here's the info on the recoil thread repair kit
Part #4001 or 35070

The bolt size is M7-1
The drill bit to use is a 7.3mm or 9/32

#1 Cover everything around the engine except for the camshaft cap your working on. I also got real ****, and ran my shop vac while I was drilling.

#2Remove the camshaft cap alignment dowel from the cylinder head first. I used a small pair of needle nose vice grips.

#3 measure the depth of the hole in the head. Use a piece of electrical tape and wrap that around your drill bit according to your measurement. The tape is now your "depth guage" for drilling into the head.

#4 Drill slowly. It's only aluminum. and not much pressure/speed is needed. The main thing is to keep the bit aligned with the hole, and not at an angle.

#5 Clean up the shavings. Now use the provided "install tool" and install the new "helicoil" until it bottoms out, and the small tang breaks off. Remove the small tang from the bottom of the hole.

#6 Reinstall your camshaft cap dowel.

#7 Install your camshaft cap with the bolt thread and head lubricated with engine oil. Be nice with your torque wrench.

#7 Bow to the SHO GODS as you're good to go.:thumb:

The proper way to go about it is this:

Helicoils do work, but I got tired of dealing with them. BTW, if you have an M7x1 helicoil, and you stripped out the threads, you don't have to drill. The hole is pretty much already the size you need it to be to start tapping. ;)

Do it a couple more times and they'll strip. They are an extremely weak thread for aluminum.

Just to add... DO NOT use a 150ft-lbs torque wrench to torque something that's only 12ft-lbs. Get a quality torque wrench that is for lower torque settings (in-lbs and convert). I've got three seperate torque wrenches because of that.

Unless I'm mistaken, I think he has an electronic torque wrench, as in strain gauge with a digital readout/ alarm of the torque value.

1/4" drive for a torque wrench? I don't think I've even seen one of those. MY 250 in-lbs torque wrench is still 3/8".

Regardless, if that torque wrench is made to go to 150 or even more than 75 ft-lbs, I would NOT use it for such a low torque rating. Torque wrenches are the most accurate when they are in the middle of the measuring range.

50 foot pounds is the limit. i have it in 1/4, 3,8 and 1/2 inch but what is the tap size fo that helicoil because i just got the inserts and need to know what tap size to tap it to. the only place that i found that size helicoil is napa and they wanted 50 bucks for it. any info would be great. it looks like it should be a 3/8 24 but a standard? the 10mm by 1.0 is to big is it a 9 mm tap. if it is that is an oddball size?

I bought the helicoil kit from Napa. They include the tap, insertion tool, and helicoils. I paide about $40 something because of a discount, but after you have the kit, you can buy inserts seperately. Don't use a standard tap, you won't get a helicoil to properly fit it and then you'll pull out those threads too....

yamahaSHO - how did you get those heads that clean? The blue marks you see are from the quality checks that are done at the factory.

They are brand new ;) They have never, ever been installed on a SHO motor until a few days ago.

However, the machine shop cleaned up my old heads just as nice.
