Hello, what grade oil for a 91? In California w/ 175k

Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w 30 is what I use in both my 91 and 89. I use the Motorcraft FL1A filter with it.

first, pick one brand and stay with it. there are a lot of reasons for this, but that is the short story. Castrol is good, Mobil is good - those are my top choices.

I recommend 5W30 or 0W30 depending if you like to run synthetic or not.

And use a Motorcraft filter. I posted a test report that will give you the details why.

A 2nd for Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w 30 and the Motorcraft FL1A filter! I'd go to a 5w 30 if you're in the northern realm!

A bit off track: do you guys recommend the "regular" Castrol or the "German" Castrol? Does it matter?

Auto zone shows the fl400s motorcraft filter. What's the difference between that & the fl1a?

Fl1a is larger/taller I belive, more surface area to catch unwanted things.

Size. FL400S is the stock replacement. FL1A holds more.

The FL1-A holds more, but does not fit in all cases. Like mine. The FL-400/FL-400S has served my car for all its miles. Along with Castrol GTX 10W-30, regular, not high mileage.

The FL1A does have more capacity, but I prefer the size and silicone anti-drainback valve in the FL400S.

The comment about not switching oils was to give credit to Castrol GTX for allowing my engine to accumulate 435,000 miles with no oil related problems. The SHO was just on the track at the convention last summer and ran like it was made for it.

it's true you can't make a generalization with only one case study but Scott SHO has more miles and he knows more about it than most i've seen.
my 2 cents i used to run pennzoil only for a long time. last 10 years i've run everything and anything. sometimes a random quart of two of synthetic or 5w20. always with the fl-1a or equivalent. 240 k on my 89 doesn't burn any. i also owned one that had 10-w40 or something else silly put in it. burned a quart every thousand. also over 200k. not sure if it was the oil or just the wear and time.
i would always stick with 5w30. i certainly don't see a problem with a bigger filter that's why i use it.
