Rod Bearing Info

About the rod bearings....what are they? what do they do? where are they located? how hard is it to replace them?
Marko,
Even though it sounds like your problem is likely not worn rod bearings, I thought I'd give you some info to help you understand the questions you've posed about them (rod bearings are a popular subject on this forum). Have a look
here for some basic info on internal combustion engines (note that the diagram depicts a
SOHC engine versus your
DOHC). Item "O" in the diagram on that page labels the rod bearings which are basically thin, semi-circular pieces of metal about an inch wide that surround the interface between the connecting rod and the crank shaft (one half on the top, the other on the bottom). As the engine operates, the connecting rod is shoved down and then pushed up, and the rod bearings sustain (provide a wear surface for) the rotating loads on the crankshaft from the connecting rod -- I think that's clear. There is one pair of rod bearings for each cylinder, so your 6 cylinder engine has 6 pairs of bearings. Have a look
here for info on how to change the bearings, and some good pictures of the bearings themselves.
From my experience, it seems that the rod bearings are probably the weakest link in the V6 Yamaha SHO motor (mechanically), and as more and more miles are clocked on them, more forum members are either forced to change theirs, or replace them as a precaution (as I did). As others have said numerous times, it's "cheap insurance".
Anyway, I hope this clears a few things up for you!
