That slightly rusty "ring" around where the sensor goes into the pan is the seal. It consists of the metal ring you can see, and an attached rubber ring that forms the actual seal. You aren't missing anything. If it isn't visibly leaking oil, it is fine.

Not surprising, the level sensor is a very common leak spot on the SHO. It would probably be a good idea to go ahead and replace the gasket to prevent the leak from starting up again; at your next oil change would be a good time, since there is no oil to leak and you are already under the car. I think it a Ford-dealer-only part, under 5 bucks.

Can someone please inform me where is the oil sending unit located? I've had oil leaking onto my converters for a while now, and I want to see if mine is leaking so I can possibly tighten it up also :D

The oil level sensor is at the left side of the oil pan (towards the front of the car). It screws right into the side of the pan. It shouldn't be able to leak oil on your cats, my money would be on cam seals (esp. rear one) or maybe oil pan seals.

wrong, wrong, wrong.

RIGHT SIDE of the engine, towards thee firewall.

and yes, it will drip right onto the exhaust if you have a leak.
