OIl in the cylinders

If I put a few drops of oil in a cylinder, will it hurt anything?

Drops? nope , A good exemple is leaky oil valve stem seals , it drops right into the cylinder. It will puff blue a lil bit and that's it.

Nope. I have some strange smells and emissions coming from my engine bay and wanted to see where it was coming from. It's been doing it ever since the engine was built and installed. I don't know where it is coming from so I thought that it'd be a good way to make the source a bit more obvious.

its not oil burning off the cats is it? If someone scratched the cam a little when installing the cam seal, that can and will leak forever.

I have never heard of doing something like that before to locate a problem. I don't think that a couple of drops would hert but at the same time i would question doing that at all. I know someone here would know more then i do so....

Well, look at it this way. If the stuff coming up suddenly gets thick and stinky, I'll know it's an exhaust leak. If it doesn't change it's something else.
