I can't get a definitive answer in the other thread, so I'll ask here. :corn:

What will I have to do to seal the oil cooler after I put it back on? Can I get the gasket(s) anywhere? Can I make my own? I have yet to take it off the block, but it will probably happen tomorrow, so I need to know soon. Thanks.

As mentioned, apparently Fel-Pro has an oil cooler gasket kit.

There are 2 gaskets - one large dia (about the size of the oil filter), and a smaller dia one for the bolt that runs through the middle of it.

Get a bad seal in there, and you're looking at a potential catastrophic coolant / oil mixture.

You said you have one of the gaskets? Want to part with it?

I looked for the Fel-Pro set; couldn't find anything.

I also looked on Fel-Pro's (Federal-Mogul's) website, did not see it. Perhaps it's part of the "Conversion Set", #CS9821?

Fred, Are you sure those seals separate the oil from the coolant? The larger rubber gasket seals the heat exchanger to the block. The smaller one rides in a pocket that surrounds the transfer tube with the bypass spring and plunger in it. The coolant flows though sealed tubes inside the heat exchanger.

Or am I all wet with hot coolant on this one?

the larger gasket was torn on mine causing a leak. the smaller one seals the bolt.

both seals are for oil. there is no chance for oil/antifreeze mixing, unless the exchanger itself fails.

I'd honestly have to take a closer look at it - I thought the bolt one separated, but didn't give it a whole lot of thought.

For the cooler adapter to the block you can make your own or use some silicone gasket maker.

Paul,

Isn't that a flat o-ring type of gasket? If it is, I wouldn't advise using silicone in its place. I'll go and check right now.

Tom went out to check, and his polished (everything) flash-blinded him. He's stumbling around the desert now, trying to avoid the Cottonmouths, Scorpions, & Recluses. ;)

Yeah, I'm always careful to wear eye protection around that buggy. Looking at it with the ***** eye is ill-advised.
