Oil Changes

Okay, lets say you just bought your used SHO and the oil is very clean but you don't when it was last changed or even what kind of oil is in it. What would you do, and what kind of oil would you use? What about the trans fluid as well?

What you do is change the oil right away, no matter how clean it looks. I've found SHO engines rarely get oil real dirty so its hard to tell when it was last changed. For oil I currently use Motorcraft 5w-30 all year round. The reason for Motorcraft orginally was I get it for free. I was planning on Castrol GTX when I don't work for Ford anymore, but the Motorcraft does such a good job, I may stay with it. The Motorcraft has provided an extremly clean engine. As for the tranny, I would drop the pan and change the filter and fluid. I couldn't believe how many shaving were in the 98 at only 30k. The fluid was pretty dark also. It almost looked like oil. I just changed the tranny fluid and filter my Crown Vic with 130k on it for the first time. The pan has NEVER been dropped and it had ALOT less shavings and the fluid was alot cleaner then the SHO...

agree, change the oil. could be 89cent bargain basement special. I'm partial to castro syntec but to each his own.

Thanks for the input, but should I go with a synthetic or regular oil in the engine and tranny?

There is a mixed view on synthetics in the engine on this board, but many have had great experience, including myself, with Castrol GTX(non-synthetic). SDPatt, owner of one of the higher millage cars on the board(over 240k+ I believe), recommends Castrol GTX as his engine is still clean and running strong. As for the tranny is concerned, many have had a great experience with Syncromesh, a product of GM. It can be had at most GM dealers or other companies make a similar product such as penzoil. I would however recommend getting the real stuff, kind of like getting a generic perscription vs the real deal headbang .

I just bought 2 cases of Mobil Drive clean oil. It was only .87 a quart and good oil.

I like the Amsoil ATX fluid. It is the best I have found. The GM syncromesh is for the MTX SHOs.

I would recommend Mobil 1. It is synthetic and makes the engine run great. I even had it in my 93 Sable
