i was wondering if anyone else had problems with oil burning and smoking, i burnt about a qaurt and a half of oil in about 2 weeks,(bout 500 miles or so), right now it's in the shop getting the valve seals replaced, the person i bought it from had a compression test done and everything came out good with that..so i don't think it's the rings...is there anything else that would cause the burning of that much oil?

I'd check it for leaks first. Front main and cam seals can leak at the rate you describe, causing lots of smoke from under the hood. Also check both the oil level and pressure senders.

theres not really any leaks, just a little on the pan gasket, the smokes coming out the exhaust, so it's burning it somehow...

most of it is on start up and if you really get on the gas it'll smoke pretty good, the garage seems to be taking there time on it, but i'll let ya know what happens.

I've got the same problem with my SHO. Not only does it smoke, but if I really get on it it shoots water out the tail pipes. I suspect bad valve seals, and a blown head gasket. Needless to say it's sitting in the driveway until I get the funds to get it fixed. I guess the good news is that I've found a replacement engine with less than 50,000 miles for $500.00. I may just rent a cherry picker and swap the engine out.

Why do you assume you have a blown head. If you have no loss of coolant to support your theory you may find your self spending alot of $$ for no reason. BTW one byproduct of the cats doing their job is water vapor which can accumulate into water.

I have experienced a loss of coolant, I've replaced almost all of the hoses on the car and the t-stat with the 60k. I have not found any other leaks since the hoses have been replaced.

At first I assumed that it was just condensation becasue the car sat for a while, however upon start up the car idles roughly until it's warmed. I also assume that this is from coolant being suck in. The water from the exhaust does seem to have a sweet smell to it as well, (could be my imagination though). I know I have to do a compression test, and leak down test, and cooling system pressure test before I'm 100% sure. I don't want to take any chances so I parked the car in the drive until I get the funds to diagnosis and fix it properly.

The engine has close to 200,000 on it so I thought that maybe the engine that I found would be a wise investment. I figured maybe I'd come out ahead by going that route. I'd have a good core for future upgrades, and the car wouldn't have to be down for long. Don't get me wrong, I like to save a buck or two, I'm just thinking about future plans.

Here is one solution to oil burning that is cheap - remember this is one solution and may not be the right one, but in my case, thank god, it worked and saved me a pile of money:

I have an '89 SHO with 90000 miles on it and it started burning oil, one occasionally but the same problems that everyone else has listed. I took my car into the local ford dealer who suggested they do an aggressive engine flush because they suspected a sticking oil scraper ring. That actually cured the problem. It cost me $100 CDn (which is like $0.10 USD). They suggested changing the oil a couple more times within about 2000 miles and having a local oil place do the minor engine flush a couple more times and that should completely cure the problem. But I have noticed that everything works great, the performance is back in the car and I don't have a little minor blow by but its' not blue, its' black which is fuel, which indicates to me a fuel/air ratio adjustment is required, but that is sure a heck of a lot easier than replacing an engine

i'm going to call ford in the morning and see what they say, i think something inside the engine may be restricted b/c it takes a long time for the oil to drain back to the pan, so i'll see what they say about it.. i don't know if they'd do a flush on my car though it has over 165k on it

all of a sudden my car stopped using oil, i put about 2 1/2qts in it within 3 weeks, and all of a sudden it stopped using oil, i've gone since monday morning without putting oil in it, before i'd have to add a half or quarter of a quart every day or 2. i had the valve seals replaced, i was just wondering if maybe it takes some time for the seals to break in and seal properly. i also have poor acceleration and the top end performance isn't that great as of lately. i also still smell smoke in the car, but it doesn't seem to be as bad as it was.
thanks.
