First off, I want to thank all of you for all the great info that you have on this site. Very informative.

My question is about the "obsolete" valve shims. I did my 60K over the weekend and needed (2) 2700 shims and (1) 2725 shim. Unfortunately the largest that I had in the kit was 2675. Are the larger shims still available or am I SOL?

Go to your local Yamaha dealer and see if they have that size still. The shims are the same as in the motorcylces.

They were 0.230mm, 0.255mm, and 0.255mm after replacement. And they were all on the intake side. So, two of them are still out of spec. and I'd like to bring the 0.230 clearance down too.

That's too bad. I took all of my intakes down to .152 except for a couple of .178 and .203 because my largest shims were 2.650

All my exhausts hit .254

I think the shim diameter is 29mm. There will be several different diameters at the yamaha motorcycle dealer. You'll probably want to do a search to be sure or just measure them.

Is it common for cycle shops to have these in stock? Anyone have any experience? I'm not familiar with what bike(s) they are used on and/or how common they are.

I haven't bought from the motorcycle shops but expect them to have to order them. Also, I think they come in 5 packs and $6 a shim is typical. So you might be out $30 for 5 2700 shims and another $30 for 5 more 2725 shims.

There was another thread about these last week I think. Look it up.

I have purchased two packs of the larger size shims from a Yamaha dealer. I paid the price shown below and had to wait 4-5 days to receive them so they are not a "deal," but at least they are available if needed. The bike shops only carry the .05 mm increments so you won't be able to get the 2.725 mm and 2.775 mm sizes. I still have the unopened packs of 5 so if you need a few, I can provide them at cost plus the stamps for the letter.

2.700 mm, K&L 13-7649, $19.95/5
2.750 mm, K&L 13-7650, $19.95/5

I think these are used in older bikes so they most likely won't be in stock. They were used in Kawasaki and Yamaha bikes I think.

I went to a reputable yamaha/kawasaki shop and was laughed at and got nowhere. I went to a local shop and got a few. People get real dumb and argumentative when you tell them you're looking for car parts at a bike shop. I wish I knew the bike models that used 29mm shims.
I was able to get shims from http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/valve_shims.htm in 2 days. The shims aren't used, and sure as **** don't have holes drilled through them either!
You can only get the motorcycle .5mm increments but this should suffice for most.

Scott,

If you can spare a few, I'm definitely interested. I ran through the #'s and I can use two 2.700mm and one 2.750mm. Please let me know what you have to have for them.

Four bucks a piece plus shipping. Let's call it an even $15.

The shop here in Toledo had to order the shims. Wish I could find the receipt with the numbers on it. Anyway, I think the engine/cycle was something like ZX 1100 or maybe XS 1100. I'm by no means a bike expert. I didn't know which engine, so I asked to talk to a mechanic. He instantly recognized the part and the engine it came out of. Where in Ohio are you? The shop I dealt with was in Maumee.

The way it sounds, it can be a hastle getting them from a cycle shop. Probably depends on the shop I'm sure. Anyway, thanks to all for your help. I am going to get the shims I need form Scott since he has extras. thumbs_u

I'm sending Randall the shims.

I saw a cross reference listing of all the various size shims that the different bikes used. There were dozens of Yamaha and other brand bikes in the 600 cc and larger displacements that used the 29 mm diameter shims. There was also a much greater range of thicknesses available than we need for the SHO.

One shop took me back to their service department and let me talk to the tech that performed the valve adjustments on the bikes. He showed me his compartmentalized box of shims and said that they rarely need new ones, that they just reused the ones that were removed from the bikes that were serviced. Remember that the bikes require valve gapping at more frequent intervals than the SHO and many of the SHOs are allowed to go far past the recommended adjustment intervals.
