Yesterday I put new plugs and wires in my car because they looked like they had not been changed in a long time. I got Boush platinum plugs and a cheap set of wires (because it was all I could find in this town). Now my car runs like @$$. It seems to idle ok, but when I get it out on the road and get on it a little it starts to back fire and has no power. What could be wrong? I pulled each wire off one at a time when I had it running and they all seem to be getting spark.

Just b/c the plug sparks doesnt mean its a good spark. I would probably start with the factory recoomended plugs (a new set of course). Did it run better before changing out the plugs and wires?

Yes it ran better.

Well, then the answer is obvious. What you changed (plugs & wires) hurt the performance of the car. Plain and simple.

You can get a brand new set (6) of plugs online for 30 bones shipped. Got mine from Ford Parts Network - http://www.fordpartsnetwork.com/sho.htm the second item "AGSP32FM Motorcraft Spark plug set $ 23.94" plugs like 6-7 for shipping.

Well I am headed back to Autozone to take back the plugs and wires I will see if they have the plugs I need. The wires that were on it were motorcraft and they seem to be alright so I will get the plugs and see if that fixes the problem.

AZ wont have what I (as well as many others) would recommend you get. I would strongly recommend the motorcraft plugs.

If the old wires were working with no problems, then I would continue using them until you can get new motorcraft ones. (my wires started falling off, so I got new motorcraft wires and plugs. Not 1 problem since day 1...no mis-fire, no falling off, no hp loss) Just my opinion again...

Its your car....

My friends 90 SHO had bosch plugs installed by the previous owner. His car chugged along misfiring all the way up till 4k RPM. Once new Taylor wires and Motorcraft Plugs were put in, the car ran like new with none of the problems it had before.

I agree that the Bosch plugs are crap in the SHO, but it could also be something quite simple...

Did you make sure your plug wires were routed properly?

Autozone had Motorcraft plugs. they were $29.00 for the set. The wires were all done right, I did them one by one. I got the plugs now it is time to put them in and put the intake back on.

What could be causing it to run rich?

When I did my tune up, I put the wires in wrong. It plain didnt start. No Idle, no nothing. When I checked the diagram above, it fixed that. With bosch plugs in or motorcraft, if the wires are on wrong, it wont start. At least I think it wont start. (correct me if I'm wrong )

It will start with them reversed. I did that to my MTX when I replaced wires and plugs. Drove it down the road about .1 mile and I knew something was wrong. It was VERY obvious...no power almost at all. I felt like I had more acceleration on my bicycle. Me and my dad take a look at my sisters SHO ATX at the time, and sure enough we had wires 5 & 6 mixed up. Swapped them into the right position and she purred like a kitten.

Usually they dont have the motorcraft plugs...did you get the right part #'s? I dont want you to put the wrong ones in.

They had the right ones. I took the old ones in with me. Now that I have put them in and the put the old wires back on it runs OK. It is 100x better then it did before.

Now my next question...

What would cause it to be running rich?

When I start to take off it seems like it is getting too much gas and stalls for a second.

Are you letting the clutch out too fast? Are you saying its running rich b/c it stalls for a second?

More information is needed as to why you think its running rich and what is happening for you to think this.

When I took out the Boush plugs that had been in for maybe a 20 minute run I could tell that the car was running rich. Also because of it stalling, and no I am not letting the clutch out too fast.

So...how could you tell that the car was running rich? Was there gas pouring out?

Just b/c it was stalling doesnt mean its running rich. For instance, if your IAB/IAC is going out, that would cause it to stall, and it is just a bypass valve to let ait into the intake. If this part doesnt open, the car gets no air, so it does not pump any fuel (since the MAF sees little to no air) and then the car dies.

If you state what happened or what you experienced, you will get more responses and replies than saying I know its running rich, why?

Just trying to help...

You did mention to me when I visited that your gaskets for the intake weren't in all that good shape. Could you be getting a leak through there and it letting some fuel vapors escape?

FYI, you can change the plugs and wires without removing the intake.
