Hey there..... was wonderdering if any of you have a similar problem with your trans? 92 MTX 5 sp. rod shift. 1st it's notchy....the warmer it get the better it shifts, but at times it is still very notchy. I usally just double clutch it all the time, it shifts o.k. then. 2nd when I redline the machine then stepping all the way on the clutch, the shifter feels like it wants to be wielded to 1st gear.....all other gear shift out of gear smoothly. 3rd it's very noisey...when I step on the clutch the noise stops.....also at that same instance it makes a funny "whhheeeeeee" sound. It only lasts for a few seconds. So campers what do you think? Thanks.

Welcome to the lovely Mazda 5-speed.

Its a piece of junk.

First things first, pull up on the clutch pedal, then depress it a few times. This will take any un-needed slack out of the cable, allowing the clutch to disengage as it should.

Then, STOP DOUBLE CLUTCHING. This trans has syncros, all you are doing by double clutching is wearing out your pressure plate finger and throwout bearing faster.

You might benefit from changing the fluid out.

Other wise, your clutch might be near the end of it's life, as it sounds like it isnt disengaging all the way.

Re: Changing transaxle fluid, you can drill a hole through the trans pan, cut some threads and install a brass drain plug to ease the fluid changing proceedure. Some recommended fluids are GM Synchromesh, Mobile 1, Valvolene syncro...

But probably x2 on new clutch time. Make sure you use someone you can go back to with problems cause some folks do better work than others.

Also remember there are a lot of things that can be done while changing a clutch. Make sure your ready to address these cause just swapping a clutch may leave a bunch of worn stuff covered up when its all said and done!

Fly me (and my fiance) out to Vegas (round trip, of course) and I'll swap the clutch for you(no charge except for parts). I'll build an engine support on the spot if you get me a rack and drop me off @ Planet Hollywood.
