So I am no automotive expert, novice at best, but my parking break release **** came off in my damn hand today. :madflame: It came with about a foot or so of cable and my brake is now stuck on. Luckily I was only a block or so away from my house. Anyway, has anyone had this happen to them, and/or replaced the emergency brake line before? Any tricks and helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

You can undo the rear connections from the T just under the driver's side door. Once that is done take a flat head screw driver and pry the ebrake mechanism on the caliper until the brake releases. Do so on both rear sides.

Once you're done with that you can remove the rest of the cable attached to the handle out if you haven't already. I'm not sure if that particular section is obsolete or not, probably is, but if not get a new one, install it and reconnect to the T under the driver's door.

Those damn T handles always rip out. It's a stanf=dard part, probably the same on the SLO also. There's a procedure listed HERE

my 91s ripped out just as I was taking it to be saftied...I could get it to engage and disengage manually by reaching underneath...

I tried to remove one from a 94 wagon, and what a PITA! I ended up rigging up a very ghetto release that passed safty.

I have completely removed the parking brake assembly in my 94 ATX, after I had to take it out to replace a broken heeod release cable...

what another PITA!!

Any better description of this? Underneath of what? I just got back from vacation and wont be able to work on it until later this week. It would be nice to take her for a ride. I miss my baby.

You can release the cable very easy.

IT is down by your foot pedal. If you look closely at where the other cable went to disengage it you will see what you need to do. I left mine broke for 3 months and just manually disengaged it.

I figured that out. Thanks though. I went out and looked around and had to :bonk: myself for being so stupid. Sometimes stuff breaks, I get angry... and i don't think so clear. I was fine once I took a step back for a while and checked it out.

You can greatly extend the life of those cables by applying a bit of pressure on the e-brake pedal with your foot as you are releasing it.

I do it because I hate that THUMP it produces when you let it relase on its own. :bonk:

Have done it with all my vehicles...

I LOVE that thump. WHACK! It lets you know the e-brake's off!! :****: But even more than that I love a good, proper e-brake handle between the seats, where god intended it. Shoot, I'll even take an e-brake handle to the LEFT of a driver's seat! ;)

:snicker: I agree. There's something satisfying about that whack that says "you won't be smoking your pads for lunch today" although it makes sense it would wear things out. My pedal is messed up anyway. I think I should look into junkyard hopping for a new assembly.
