Okay, this is a shot of my plugs in order as they appeared from front bank drivers side. In other words the closest is cylinder number 5. Those of you that were around a couple of years ago you might remember that a blast into the 10+ psi boost range when my #5 fuel injector failed caused a noise that at first sounded like the cam tick then after a day developed into what I was sure was a rod knock. I removed the oil pan and all the rod caps but no spun bearing. I then pulled the front head and observed a pitted burned piston in the #5 cylinder. The ring ended up seizing then fracturing also causing the land between the middle and top ring to shatter.

Well when we went to Kansas last week one of the boys used Whoosh and returned it with a distinct miss. He of course denied any wrong doing. By yesterday it was blowing a pretty good cloud out the tail pipes and it required 2 quarts when I checked it on the next fuel stop. I was going to run a compression check today when I discovered this.

Might seem like a silly question, but are you running FM plugs with the blower?
Nevermind, I blew up the photo a little more and now they look more like Denso Iridiums.

Yup, 16's. I am pretty happy with them. I am going to attempt to pull the piston in the car and replace it using the same rod since I really don't have the money to be doing bearings right now. I still have the crate motor block also missing # 5 and a Ford racing engine rebuilder says I should easily be able to get away with just honing it. I hope I get that lucky with this one. The thing is I am thinking it has more to do with a failure in the wiring or trigger, though the latter is less likely as I have a different ECU in there since the last time number 5 went south (determined a very small chunk of rubber that was introduced to the post filter fuel system when the FMU was fitted into the fuel system) burning the top of the piston and siezing the ring. That resulted in the rings and a land cracking. Biggest difference when the other failure occured was it was knocking like a connecting rod. In fact I ended up pulling all the rod caps looking for it before I pulled the head and found the real reason. Still think it has something to do with the boy having just driven the Z-06 a few minutes before jumping back into the SHO.
