I picked up my old 93 ATX tonight and after a stint on the highway I got a clicking noise coming from the back valve cover at 1500-2000 rpm's. I am not sure about the valve lash adjustment. It did not affect performance. The motor has 131000 on it. What is the cost of the shims and where can I get them and how can I do it?

best if you did the valve adjustment yourself, in my area it is impossible to find a decent mechanic I would trust with my SHO. You can get the shims at a yamaha or kawasaki dealer just ask for 29mm shims. The "special" tools needed I got from snap on for around 45 dollars. While you are there it would be a good time to repalce the wires if needed and valvel cover/ plug well seals. All of which you can get from an AutoZone, or from places here on the forum like FPS or RCM. If you weren't 1000 miles away I would help ya do it. Look for other members from your area, you could get lucky and find someone close that would be willing to help you out.

Yea-I already replaced the gaskets/seals about 3000 miles ago. Is the 29mm shim the stock thickness and should I just replace them all? And about how much are we looking at? Aer the diameters of the shims the same for the 3.2 as they are for a motorcycle engine?-

It's probably not shims. Take the intake and valve covers off and just check the shims...it should only take 20 minutes or so once the covers are off.

If your sound is on the passenger side, it could be:
The timing belt tensioner
The accy drive belt tensioner
Rod bearings
an injector
...lots of things.

The best thing to do would be to find a way to record the sound and post it here. Make sure to indicate what RPM the engine is at when you record. Depending on the speed and volume of the sound, I am 90% sure I can tell you what it is.

Yes the 3.2 are the same, as for the thickness, you need to determine which one you need. they come in different thicknesses. check valve lash with a feeler gauge and find out which shims to get.
Here is a table for that:

Host the file on a website like photobucket, which is free, then post the link in thread.

go out to your car right now and take off the upper timing belt cover which is just under the crossover tube. the belt will be sloppy if the timing belt tensioner is bad. If the knocking sound is between 1500 and 2000, then goes away after 2000 or so then returns on the way back down from 2500 back to idle, then it IS the timing belt tensioner.

That is exactly what it is doing(good thing I bought a spare a while back as I have an atx-I knew they were hard to find) I have tried to upload a video to photobucket but it is very slow. I will attempt in the morning -

F-22/Did you get a chance to review the video? I am going to put the tensioner this weekend and wanted your opinion-

video confirms what is wrong. check the slack in the belt first by doing the easy removal of the crossover tube and the upper cover.

Changed the tensioner bearing tonight and the sound is still there. The sound is coming from the back valve cover. Any thoughts??-

Let me see if I understand, you changed the tensioner bearing or the whole timing belt tensioner?

I hope you changed the whole tensioner...it's a hydrolic piston that tensions the timing belt on atx's. To install a working tensioner, you would have had to compress the tensioner using a vise and secure it with a small drill bit thru the hole on the tensioner, When you removed the tensioner, could you actually depress the piston by hand? If so, the piston was bad.

The noise you hear from the back cover is on the passenger side no?

How can I replace the piston and where can I get one? Also, how can a noise like that come from a bad piston?-
