i just finished putting my car back together started early this morning with the tranny... went to work for a few hours and finished her up... now it wont start, it clicks like the starter wants to turn over, but stops, i dont know if maybe the starter wires are scrambled... ive got 2 reds on the larger post and the black one on the smaller post...

anyways... any ideas?? oh and also i didnt put my y-pipe in yet (no o2 sensors)(friggin studs) would that prevent itfrom turning over??

If all your electics work (windows, interior light, ect..), and when you turn the key you get one "click", not the multiple "clicks" that indicate dead battery, try checking and cleaning the ends of your ground cable that goes from your battery to the block.

Sounds odd, but i've seen it twice now in 45 days. Went to start my car after just driving and it wouldn't turn over. While trying to solve the problem I noticed that when I would bump the ground cable the fuel pump would prim. Took the end of the cable off the block, cleaned it (it wasn't even corroided or bad looking at all!), and the car started fine. And my buddy's 89 had the same thing yesterday (only his cable was pretty bad!)

The reason the windows and everything work with the ground cable not having a good connection is because of the small ground wire comming off the battery for the storred code memmory, but it's not a good enough ground for the starter.

hmm thanks... i think i had a dead battery... im one of those people who has a problem and thinks about rebuilding the engine before realizing youre only out of gas... it read something like a low 10Volts... i guess three months of sitting can do that to a battery! ill see what happens tomorrow if not ill check the connections AGAIN... :oogle:

Yes, when you plan on letting any car sit for a period of time, it is a good idea to unhook the negative cable, or both. Or, if it still runs, start it and let it run for a few minutes ever now and then.

yep, started right up... however it didnt stay running until i fixed the leaky manifold (removed and replaced it)

i actually took the battery out of the car, so it wasnt hooked up to anything... i think it was fully charged, but seeing to how the alternator was shot it could have been around 11Volts anyway...

When you take the battery out of the car. Don't place it on a concrete floor (ie garage floor), it'll drain it.
