with a back fire and nothing!

I just got done replacing cam chain tensioners, in a 93 atx, the car ran when I pulled it in the garage! I replaced cam sensor, ccrm, and a cam seal! I don't know if I knocked it out of timimg or what, I also cleaned out the intake!... My question is....When I replaced the tensioners could I have knocked it out of timimg? And if I did, would it start? or just back fire out of the egr? Just gas and boom....

I'm lost to what to do!

Well.. did u mark those gears like I told you too? :) There may have been a few random hydrocarbons floating around in there after you cleaned it maybe... might make it a bit 'rich'.

So what is it doing when u try to start it now? You only try to start it once?

If they were marked then they should be ok... did you happen to turn the motor over to see if the marks on the pulleys lined up with the heads by chance?

IF the chain came off I would set everything to TDC and then pop open the end of the timing covers to make sure. Hope u get it sorted out.

So, is the engine cranking, but just not starting?? If so, i had this issue after i did my clutch on the 94. I tried 5 or 6 different times and the car just wouldn't start. I finally held the gas to the floor, and it fired right up.

EDIT: Yes, it did backfire as well. Have no idea why though.

That's what I thought, however that was a lot of slack in the the chain, would that make of anything?

As ar as chain links, there are 2 lighter colored links that line up with the dots on the sprockets and then with the top edge of the heads. They may be tough to see without pulling the valve covers completely off.

I would just make sure the dots on the sprokets line up with the heads at TDC. Then you could rotate the engine to TDC agian. If the dots still line up then the cams are rotating with the correct timing. If the rear exhaust timing is off it cause more issues since that one is also used or the cam sensor.

I am assuming the sprockets are timed the same on an ATx as an MTX.

Yeah, it's the rear time with the cam sensor!...that was the only chain that came off!

No the ground strap is on there good and tight!....thanks for the reply!

Thanks, Jayro, I completely forgot about those lighter colored links going where the timing marks go. That could be the ticket :)

The way they were marked was with a paint pin on an oily surface, most of the marks came off when we were working on it, and there was one still there on the cam gear, but not the chain, so there was no way to know if we had it back on right or not.

If you marked them, there shouldn't be a problem with the timing. ? Did you not mark them?

Before you go tearing it all apart to line up the light links ect. I would just set it to TDC (put a long screw driver in the # 1 cylinder if you cant use your crank pulley) and see if the dots on the chain side sprockets line up with the edge of the heads. Rotate the crank until you r at TDC agian. If the dots still line up with the egde of the heads then you are timed correctly. The light links are just for referance when installing.

It's ready to start the timing it right!....There was a lot of slack in the chains!, everything looked off in the back! The marks we made were off in a big way!, I have a new cam chains to put in there also....

Thanks for the tip Jayro
