I had a surprise today. Last fall I went to start my 1996 SHO and it did not start. I heard a popping from what sounded like from a intake valve as if a valve was sticking open or a cross fire from a wet distributer when there was distributors. I was not going to drive it last winter so I left it thinking cam problem even though when I bought the engine the cam were supposed to be welded.

I just took the valve covers off today and the cams are welded and the timing seems to be fine. I blew air into the plug holes when the valves were closed and it seems to be fine. The last time I drove it there was not a hint of a problem.

I thought of a leak down test but that is all.

I wouldn't think if I put it together it would start right up.

I didn't know what else to do. Any ideas appreciated. thanks

solved problem for now

After replacing the engine it started. With the use of a spark plug anti fouler I blow are into the engine I removed and most of the intake valves leaked. I expected the guy I bought the engine from was lying to me about the cams being welded and one slipped but that was not the case. The timing was good. I have had a lot of cars and pretty much never did one have such a serious internal problem and give no clue (except for wet distributor caps back in the day). I have the other engine back in now and it is running.
