No sound

Okay I posted on a searched post but didn't see it come up. I searched and found only one post that sounded (or didn't ) like mine.. I can only faintly hear any sound if the volume is all the way up... I tried to hook up to the regular power wiring plug also and still no change. I have the back seat out for easy access to the amps. If I pull the plug on the gray wire coming to the blackamp and then plug it back in there is a pop through the system. That tells me its getting a signal. Dunno 'bout about anything else... I'm thinking about trying another h/u or amp to narrow it down?

So to like the head unit is fried. More specifically the preamp loop output is fried. I have 3 tape decks that one or both of the preamp loop outputs are dead and they do the exact thing you are describing. Toss the head unit and pick up another on ebay for $15 or so.

Okay, while waiting for the rain to stop so I can start pulling the core support... I put in the other h/u I got from Dan on Sunday. Same problem. He said that as far as he knows both were good. Is there a pin(s) or wire(s) I can check with the meter to verify that the h/u and amp are good? Also, since I dont have the CD player right now which, long plug should I use? The one with the red plug for the CD or ithe one on the metal support. I might even try an old Kenwood I have from my Mustang that has the long plug for the speakers. I saw the mate to that one up on the brace too... That way I'll just bypass the Amps all together to see what happens. Which fuse(s) are for the stereo system in the fuse box? TIA

I remember reading somewhere about a blue wire with 5 volts on it going somewhere... What is it/does it do? I think I found it. I tried to put in my old Kenwood and the constant 12 hot fuse blew on it just as it powered up then it died... Radio won't work w/out that line. It is matched up the the lt. grn/yel on the car...

I know your problem. When there is no CD player, there this is little plug that goes into the back of the headunit. It just clips and in connects 1 or 2 wires. When it does this, the amps come back on with no problems. The headunit is sending the signal, but this thing tells the amps to turn on or something of the like.

When you have a CD player, this little clip piece is no longer in the headunit, but on the back of the CD player...and without the CD player hooked up, it will not work. Either way, you have this piece. Look on the back of the headunits/CD player where the connectors plug in and in the top right hand side when looking at the back of the deck, there is a black insert with a push in tab to remove it. (this is the piece)

I did this same thing when I removed the CD player from the car and tried to put the factory head unit back in without the CD player. I only got very quite sound when the volume was all the way turned up. Ryan (Fast4SHO) came over, pulled this piece out of the back of the CD player and put it in to the back of the headunit. Sounded great with no problems.

Ah, you did not mention that you were missing the jumper plug. A missing jumper plug will do the same thing as dead preamp loops.

SO apparently I need to get ahold of the jumper... I dont have it on the h/u then right? Or can I make one? I goes in the top 6 pin connector? I don't have the CD. I got a good price on the car, Dan had to make something on it. Anyone got a pic?

If it worked before, what did you do with the jumper? Sell it with the CD player? Its either on the hu or on the CD player...its got to be somewhere.

As for making one, I not saying it cant be done, but knowing what it has to connect to would be a good start. I dont know how many wires are in the hole where it plugs into.

He kept a few things off the car before selling it to me. He still had to make a few bucks on the car afterall. He e-mailed me back tlast night and he has the plug. So looks like I'll get that this weekend. But why does it pop the memory fuse on the Kenwood when I hook it up to the bypass harness, then?I know this is small compared to getting it on the road. But its just something else to work on while waiting for another thing to be resolved. Also, do I still need the cables that are so blasted expensive even tho this was a CD car originally? There is a small set of wires coming off the radio set with a red plug which I figure does goto the CD. Got my eye on one on the 'bay. Thanks folks!

To bypass the amps using the bypass harness, you have to just unplug the factory amps in the trunk. Something about having 2 ams hooked up to one speakers makes one of the amps overheat...but the fuse goes before anything can really happen.

Just unplug the amps in the trunk, use the bypass harness in the dash, and replace the fuse on the kenwood...then it will work wonderfully.

Hmm, thats funky... But the ol' Mustang didn't have a JBL in it either... Something to remember iffin' I ever get an aftermarket h/u for it. I take it theres no way to use the factory amp/sub setup with aftermarket h/u's?

There is, but you have to buy another harness set (I think around $15) that you have to use on the amps in the trunk.

You will hear how each way is better, but IMO go with bypassing the factory amps. You lose the sub (if you have one), but the sound quality (as well as quantity...factory is like 20 watt to a speaker compared to a new headunit which is like 40 watts per speaker....peak of course) of a new amp compared to a 12 year old amp is mucho better.

Hey thanks. I'm just looking for quality, not quantity. I do remember something about those extra harnesses now that you mention it. Heck, that harness is prolly hard to find now... After all the cars are ten years old now...

Then you:
1) save $$
2) sounds better (opinion)
3) dont have to worry about how the amps hook up together

Okay a short revival on this. I got a CD player off E-Bay. I plugged the red harness end into the player and it powers up and all the buttons/lights work when a CD is inserted. From what I gather now I need to get the short grey shielded harness that goes from square plug in the CD up to where I had to put the jumper plug in the hu, right? Also, would a car that has the bin under the H/U have this harness? So it could be a quick dealer add-on? If, so I'm hittin up the JY again.
