I have a 91 sho that I maintain very well and the car has not givin me any trouble ever. About two weeks ago I was on my way home and I noticed I had lost power and that the idle was lower and not smooth. I made it the 20 miles home on the freeway and opened the hood everything seems to be good I did a 60K maybe 20K ago tops. I did notice my cats got red hot so I assumed that it is a spark missfire and that fuel is just being dumped into the cat. Today I was just messing with stuff ( took plug wires off put them back on wiggleing stuff around nothing big ) I started the car up at first same thing bad idel no power ect.. After running 20 sec or so It was fine. I took the car out had all the power back and it was running great. I drove it for about 20 minutes and get right around the corner from my house and I happens again no power, cats red hot, missing wtf? Has anyone had this same problem? The check engine light is also not coming on.

In the last 20K I have done the following to the motor.
Complete 60K all motocraft plugs and wires
new cats new mufflers
new fuel filter
fuel system cleaning
new cts
new maf

car has 155,000

Even without the CHECK ENGINE light you should check the codes. A memory code may have been set to point you to the cause of the problem. The red hot cats in combination with loss of power points to a misfire. A misfire without the CE light is usually caused by bad plugs or plug wires.

I must ask at this point what brand of each of those components that you installed during the 60K? Twenty thousand miles out of the incorrect spark plugs or lower quality wires is about all you can hope for. Many non-OEM brands of plugs are too tall and do not allow the plug boots to seal against the valve cover. This allows moisture and debris to enter into the plug well. The moisture can cause spark leaks or even "arc tracking" where the spark travels down the plug insulator from the anode to cathode. I have experienced this even with OEM Motorcraft plugs and wires due to contamination in the plug wells.

Correct this problem before you damage the cats or this repair will get much more expensive very quickly.

Check your DIS, all the grounds and connections. Those 2 screws that mount the crossover tube, make sure they're tight. And definately pull you're codes. Even if you don't have a CEL codes are stored and can save you alot of trouble.
