It was posted a long time ago that the proper compound to use on the back of the DIS module was heat sink grease, not dielectric grease. Well, none of the Radio Shacks around me carry the stuff anymore. So I skipped down to my local computer retail/repair store to see what they had. The salesman was helpful and showed me "silver-based heat sink grease". It comes in a 1.5g syringe and cost about $5. He said this is what they use on all the more powerful CPU's so it should be good stuff.

One tip for using it, don't concern yourself with getting even coverage on the back of the DIS. Just clean both surfaces well, apply a large glob of the HS compound on the back of the DIS near the center and screw it on. The grease will spread itself out. You don't need heat transfer all the way out to the corners anyways. Hope this helps someone out. :thumb:

Silver is the best conductor for electricity, FYI, I learned that in Microcomputer Hardware class, I think that gold is next, something else then copper. Gold being the choice of most electical connectors ie. stereo equipment because it doesn't corrode or oxidize.

Thanks Olympic!

Your not wanting it to conduct electricity, that is what the four screws do (ground the DIS that is). The compound is simply for heat transfer, no electricity goes through it.

That's true, but if it conducts electricity also then that just means a better ground for the DIS. In this situation, it's a good thing.

Oh, I'm not saying it is bad, but I don't think that rear panel is a ground point. It surely doesn't hurt but my point was that isn't its intention, but that the screws do the grounding not the panel (although it prolly helps).

I don't know if it is one or all (all would make more sense and be a more solid ground, but when did Ford makes sense). I do know that the DIS is grounded through the screws. That plate can be attached and the car won't run, put the screws to it....and it does. Their have even been cases of if screws were missing it wouldn't run....

pretty sure the right bottom one is, I remember seeing it as I combed through the mass of wire/circuit diagrams that I have, trying to search for the answer to Beth's no start. Think that one, but not sure, I am sure that that lil bugger gets pretty hot though under use! Maybe the metal is used to just transfer the heat better?!

Uhm yes, extremely. My radio shack has always had it. But, if they don't I bought 4 tubes last time so I'm good.

If they had a smilie for a dinner mint then you could have it.....how about a salute... :salute: ..

FYI, the silver based CPU compound that you used is non-conductive, for the most part. :thumb:

I vaguely rememeber reading somewhere that only one of the DIS screws serves as the ground, so you could be right.

It's actually the bottom two that are used as ground. At least according to the EVTM manual that's the way it is. And it's not really the ground for the DIS module, but the ignition. :)
