OK, I know what I am looking for is here, but I'm not having luck in finding it. All help is greatly appreciated. Problem: Half way to work I lost all gears! Clutch engages and can shift into all gears, but no go. Speedo does register, tires do not turn. New halfshafts 3 weeks ago. OK, passenger halfshaft slipped out. Shoved it back in, inched home, tore it down and found rubber boot????? inside torn. Makes horrible high pitched noise (similar to sticking brake) when turning. Can't figure out what this part is or where to obtain it. No finds in computer or paper book at AZ. HELP PLEASE!!!!!

If the speedometer is displaying speed while the car is not moving it indicates one or both of the halfshafts are no longer connected to the wheels. Check those halfshafts. The noise is due to a damaged part. You can get remanufactured halfshafts as a complete assembly with new CV joints and boots for a very reasonable cost at most any auto parts store.

I just looked up the CV HALFSHAFTS (REMANUFACTURED) for my '91 on the AutoZone.com website and found the passenger side shaft for only $59.99 including the shaft, inner and outer joints and boots.

Automatic (ATX) or manual (MTX) transaxle? The only way the passenger side halfshaft can come out of the transaxle on the MTX is if the carrier bearing is not bolted in correctly.

It is a MTX.
It got new halfshafts about 3 wks ago.
Would the carrier bearing be the part the passenger side halfshaft clicks into? Is this the same as the differential side gear? The rubber(??) piece the passenger side halfshaft slips into seems to be worn. This is not the boot on the halfshaft, but the piece indide the other part.

just a quick question for you. does it make the high pitched noise when you turn in both directions or just one? I have a similar noise when i turn left. Other than the noise, everything is fine.

On right turns. I don't notice it on lefts. The inside splines are coming out w/ the halfshaft. The rubber boot type thing is what holds them in place. I superglued it back together for a quick fix and now I have the high pitched noise, but it shifts a heck of a lot better. I figure the noise is from that bearing, but I need to know what it is called or a part number. Everyone I have talked to even the local Ford dealer thinks I am nuts. Took it to a mechanic last night and he said he'd never seen anything like it.

Were you racing the car or launching it extremly hard? If not someone didn't install those halfshafts correctly.

Didn't do either. What could have caused it? Took us 4 days for the supplier to get the correct halfshafts. They couldn't figure out it was a SHO!

amy joan:
This is not the boot on the halfshaft, but the piece inside the other part.
The pillow block bearing may possibly be the culprit. The part # is E6DZ-3K093-B, and is upwards of $300 last I heard. (good luck finding one) Your best bet would be to try and search salvage yards for the whole intermediate shaft. Have you checked the splines for any signs of damage?

Thanks! Any idea on a name for the intermediate shaft other then just that? I tried that center, inner, still no luck. Any idea on where I could just buy a new one? The only guys around here w/ SHO parts want to sell the whole thing.

It would probably be cheaper and easier to find the whole shaft/bearing as an assembly (used).
