Well, I've seen a bad CPS give a tach signal and still not fire, FWIW. I would rule out that yet. Does the EEC return any codes at all - it should give you a 111, which means no stored codes.

just double checking... did you pull a plug, and ground it and check while cranking to see if you are actually getting spark... if not... check that, and if you do have that... check to see if you have fuel pressure....

I just had a bad CPS on my '95 ATX, and the 211 code was not thrown until the third time that the car died. The tach continued to work the entire time--it would come up while cranking, but there was no spark, etc.

If you're having problems checking the codes using a code scanner, you might want to just try the wire jumper and engine check light. But, reading your first post, if you've had the battery disconnected long enough to clear your codes, the CPS code won't be in memory. You can check the CPS directly, by backprobing the CPS harness with a Digital Multimeter with the ignition in the run position and turning the crank clockwise with a 19mm socket. (Don't use an analog meter!) The output voltage should switch up or down every 60 or so degrees that the crank is turned. RanjerJ had a great post about testing each component of the DIS system and goes into more detail about the CPS check, it's in the archives.

Good Luck!

Try checking the codes using the jumper method. If the ecm won't test and the ce light just stays on then the ecm is probably bad. I had this problem last year. Swapped ecm's and fired right up.
