I picked up a "actron" code scanner.
I tried it out and I get no codes. The manual says if you get no codes stop there you have bigger problems.

Does any one have an idea what would cause no codes?

The car runs great, I was just trying to pull a VSS code, or see if anything registered.

Was there reason to suspect any codes to be stored? You should have at least got the system clear code.

I didn't even get the clear code.
The manual does say that if I didn't get a clear code, that I have other problems and to consult a mechanic.

Great exactly what I wanted to avoid by buying the blasted thing.

I did the self test on the code reader itself and it checks out.

Maybe the Actron is beat.
I did recall seeing info about a bad ground on a computer. Does that ring a bell with anyone?

Try using the jumper wire and watching the CHECK ENGINE light. Details are in the FAQs at www.shotimes.com

Return the scanner for a refund. A 6 inch piece of wire is cheaper and is all you need.

Thank you both, I bought that wonderful 35 dollar scanner to avoid using a jumper and test light.
Now I don't trust the scanner. I will try the other method.
